Your story makes a nice one to tell. But you could also have a fluorescent light powered with D cells or by a 6v lantern battery, for a whole lot less money (although not also useful for photography) :) I have both types of fluorescent lights on hand for power outages, including one which works with a few turns of a hand crank for complete independence from batteries as long as I am breathing!

I wouldn't have been as resourceful. I would probably have lit my wife's candles or used a flashlight or something.

Your resourcefulness will serve you well in life.

While I have nothing against the Paul C. Buff company, I wouldn't give them credit for saving your education. Lots of companies make emergency power battery/inverters. The UPS batteries for computers would serve such a purpose.

I have a 400w inverter I keep in my truck. When the power goes out, I can plug it into my truck's cigarette lighter, run a cord into my house and power my laptop, modem and router.
