At a local BB, the salesperson telling a potential buyer how the USM on the lens helps eliminate the blur from camera shake.

I had a guy convince my girlfriend to buy a Sony A300 because it has stabilization in the body and therefore any lens she buys from here on out will be cheaper. It was a good camera for her to learn on, and cheap. Still wish we had gotten a Rebel.

Heh, I'm not sure if Future Shop counts ;) Most of the employees there know nothing about any of their products... but hey they like to talk lots. If I ever need a good laugh I just go in and ask an open question about a computer or camera. :p

Years ago I tried to get a job at futureshop- went to one of those job fairs. They never called me back for an interview. Maybe cause I know too much...

Overheard today at Leo's Camera, Vancouver, as a woman was buying a new SD card for her point-and-shoot...

woman: "Oh I thought all of the memory cards were the same!"

clerk: "No the higher-priced brands use better memory so you don't lose the images; cheap cards can just stop working and then you've lost your photos... but I only shoot important things on film. Film never crashes. Computers crash all the time and then you've lost everything. The only way I'd lose any important images is if I had a fire at my house."

---

Now this is a pretty good camera store and I've dealt with this clerk-- he is a smart guy, knows cameras, knows photography... but I had no idea he was such a luddite. Sure, buddy, the only way you lose your photos is a house fire (or a flood)... and that never happens, right? While those of us who welcomed the digital age have multiple 100% authentic backups of our entire catalog in various secure places.

So what stupid or funny things have you heard at your local camera store?

Please report things in context.
I was the clerk you are referring to and I was having a bit of a joke with the clients. Nothing about that part of our conversation was being taken seriously.
I didn't tell her "computers crash all the time."
Luddite...Please!
And I am not Peter!

Clerks in all types of stores are less knowledgeable nowadays.
Another result of the Internet.

Welcome to the forum... Dave, is it? Sorry about the confusion of the names. I think you sold me my 5D a few years back.

If that was a joke, I couldn't tell! And about context... c'mon I was finishing my own transaction and I didn't happen to have my tape recorder running so I might have gotten a few things wrong. We've talked about film before so I know you're serious about it; nothing about the talk sounded like a joke. She was surely fairly clueless, not knowing about memory cards.

Funny enough though, I have the same nostalgic feelings about the "permanence of film" as I think you do. I shot film at my son's birth last year... not for any reason other than I liked the thought of a true physical record of the event. But you better believe I have it scanned and backed up in multiple places... a house fire wouldn't threaten my film :)

When I was buying the nifty fifty not too long ago I asked to see the 50mm f/1.4 as well and then the 70-200 f/4. The guy wouldn't even let me touch the 70-200, and said it was for 'serious photographers only' and that they had much cheaper alternatives. Instead of saying something, I just ignored him and grabbed some random Nikon body to check out (lol). He left the lens on the counter, so I picked it up and the guy literally turned back around and tried grabbing it out of my hands. Not exactly sure what his problem was. I should have grabbed it and bolted for the door as a joke.

Are you under 20? That sort of thing used to happen to me when I was younger. They think you can't know how to use it, can't be trusted with it, or have a reason to afford it.

I actually had a guy at a local camera store chain try to sell me a Nikon because it had a larger sensor than the Canon thus would create larger prints. He actually said that the Nikon would have full 4 by 6 inch prints but the Canon would be a little smaller.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
