SmugMug URL issues: .net or .com or both? :rolleyes:

I own www.poconophotos.net (external link) now for the past two yrs...Just bought www.poconophotos.com (external link) ... Any suggestions on switching over? How can I link the two?

I know enough to change the URL from one to the other on SmugMug... But now I will need to refer prospects to the new .com address...

SmugMug only allows one personal URL address connection... Any suggestions on how to forward visitors from the old address, once I switch .net to .com?

See if you can get a redirect from one to the other. So everyone who went to the .com would automatically get redirected to .net.

That's the problem... I don't know how to go about getting a redirect...
SmugMug uses GoDaddy for their domain names, and I haven't heard of any way to redirect...

I'd like to redirect from the .net name to the .com name.

A re-direct takes one line of html code. You can google it. Find a friend who only need know the most basic html, and have them upload that one page to your .com site.

EDIT: this code would do it:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="0;url=http://www.poconophotos.net">
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>

Copy it into notepad, save it as index.html and upload it

Not sure this would work with a SmugMug site.

Your best bet is to go into your Domain Management in GoDaddy and have your .net address forwarded to the .com address.

+1 to that..
I'm guessing you followed the process that SmugMug has on their FAQ for linking your domain name to your smugmug account. That process does two things:
1. It allows your domain name to directly load your smugmug page
2. It masks the XXXX.smugmug.com with whatever your .com/.net domain might be.. so people who visit see your domain name, and not the smugmug address.

Go on into your GoDaddy admin page, and set up page forwarding. For sake of simplicity, I'd suggest pairing off your main address with your smugmug account first (particularly since it may take some time to filter through). Once your main domain is correctly loading your smugmug page, and your smugmug page is correctly masking the smugmug address with your domain, then set up forwarding on the second domain name.

Thank you kindly for your leads...

I did do just what you suggested... and am working through the GoDaddy web site links, and my account with them, to forward the unused site names to my primary active web site...

I first must change the current primary .net. to a .com primary site... That's easy to do right at smugmug... after I change the .net to the .com, I'll promptly forward all of the many domain names I've purchased to the primary .com site... (*Forwarding*, is an entire section devoted to this subject on GoDaddy).

Apparently, GoDaddy also offers a free front page for each name... Am working on trying those too... (soon I'll see if they are actually free)... The free one page sites might just be worth a few extra dollars, if they turn out to cost extra.

Anyway... I'm making good progress so far through GoDaddy... Thanks again for the heads up.

Any additional hints to try, and short cuts to look for, would be appreciated...

OK, so it's been two hours... and some of the poconophotos.net links forward already and some don't...

Those in Google don't work yet... while those on my old email letters do...

Cut and Pasting the old URL still doesn't forward yet, either.

an .htaccess file should do the trick

Google .htaccess redirect for instructions

But basically create a text file called ".htaccess" and put the following line in it

Redirect 301 / http://www.poconophotos.com (external link)

Save and upload to your .net domain

All requests to the old domain will automatically be redirected to your .com domain

There are several other options which make this a very powerful tool to redirect.... but again... google ".htaccess redirect"

If you're like me, .htaccess doesn't do you any good with godaddy, since you're not really using them for hosting, just for their domain name. SmugMug does all of my hosting, and unfortunately you can't upload an htaccess file to them, so you have to go through all the steps of setting up proper forwarding and redirects through your domain names.

What you need is call domain "parking". Where one domain is parked on top of another and the names are used interchangeably. I would imagine smug mug could set this up for you without too many problems, it's a very common feature of hosting.

I've done it with a few of my sites. Not sure if I'm allowed to post links here so you can see it in action. For example I have the .net version of my site as the hosted site, then I tell my hosting package to "park" the .com and .biz names on top of it. In the domain settings for the .com and .biz names I just point it to the same server as I do for the .net name. Now when someone types any of the .net, .com or .biz name it goes to the same place and uses the version of the domain name they typed in.

I really appreciate the suggestions... So far, I've filled out GoDaddy's forwarding form, and am waiting the 24-48 hrs. they suggested for activation...

Apparently, they do the parking for me. I'll be out of town for a couple of days... Hopefully by then, the forwarding has been completed and is functioning for all 7 names.
Otherwise, they will get a call from me, for further advice.

Anyone, else deal with them on this?

Called domain name server lag (more or less), don't expect everything to be done 100% until about 48hours.

Most likely it's better to just let everything cool down, and you'll probably be able to forget about doing anything else.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Looks like it was done incorrectly. It is forwarding and masking to www.smugmug.com (external link) and not your specific .com smugmug site.

Thanks for the feedback.

I got an Email from GoDaddy last night at around 9PM, correcting my input error... Apparently, it's pretty basic.

Here's what they wrote:
"Please change the A record to reflect this IP address and
you'll be good to go!
I have attached a screen capture of my GoDaddy setup so you can see how
the finished product should look."

Having made this change early this morning, I'm to wait 24-48 hrs... Hopefully, I've done it correctly.
