I've been doing some searching, and as I am not making money taking pictures at this point, I don't want to spend $300 if I don't have to, but....Which is the preferred monitor calibration tool these days?
Spyder3? EyeOne

I myself use the spider 3, and have found my monitor to be 100% better for photo editing use.

I just found a canadian store that has the spyder3 on sale for $179, so I think I'll go that way.

I don't use the Spyder, but from previous posts I've followed here I gather that it is important to get the right version? Seemingly not all versions give you all the controls you need, so before buying, do some research.

Spyder 3 Express ~$84 from Dell. It arrived before my new 2209WA so I calibrated my Samsung SyncMaster 204B last night and it did a pretty good job (which means I didn't do such a good job of manually calibrating it).

Here's a quote from Eric Chan (external link):

"Not all monitor calibration packages allow you to specify a target luminance during the calibration process. I don't recommend these packages because having the proper monitor brightness is very important to getting consistent screen-to-print matches. I strongly recommend investing in a colorimeter package where the software allows you to specify a target luminance."

That means either the EyeOne Display 2 or the Spyder3 Elite. Both less than $200 USD.

Nope. http://spyder.datacolor.com/s3compare.php (external link)

Of course there are some who feel they don't need this functionality and are very satisfied with the Express or Pro versions. I don't agree with them on this point, but if we all agreed on everything life would be very boring.
