Been experimenting with pano's and stitching and need to know how to fix distortion that is created during the stitching process.

I am using PS CS4's photomerge feature which is doing a great job except for the stretching and distortion that is being created.

This is my first pano result and you can see the distortion in the buildings...

Thoughts on how to fix? This was a series of 4 vertical photos and buildings were vertical with no distortion in the series.

Thanks

Which photomerge option did you use? There are several choices. Perhaps one of the other choices will work better for this

I tried Auto which totally wacked it out. Then I tried Perspective which got it this close. Do other 3rd party programs handle panos better than PS?

Personally, I think so. I tried the CS4 route and didn't like that I didn't have control over what was going on. I'm hooked on PTGui. Once you use it and understand it, it's much better for panos, in my opinion.

I think PicSniper is correct. I haven't used PTGui, but PTMac has always worked well for me. I understand that PTGui is quite a bit more advanced nowadays.

You could correct the distortion in each image prior to stitching. I use PTLens ($25) and it works great.

Just my 2 cents.

Do you have different projection options in your program? I use Hugin, and there are about a dozen or more, like Rectilinear, Cylindrical, Mercator.... If you do, rty some other projections. Am...

Thats just it, in the originals there isnt distortion. Its PS photomerge that is causing it. I downloaded the demo to PTgui and it works perfectly... Just cant really pony up the cash for it right now. Was hoping a robust program such as photoshop CS4 would handle it well.

Hugin - free downloadable software - does a great job with panoramics and blending when your colours aren't fully correct.

Ok I tried the hugin software and the install was rather confusing and not really user friendly. It did give good results however one thing I am disappointed in (maybe I am missing something) but it would only let me import jpgs. No PSDs or Tifs. It would then produce a Tiff out of the jpgs. That may be a deal breaker for me.

On the up side, I think I figured out photoshops issues. Well maybe they were my issues, but I finally got a result that didnt distort and was comparable to Hugin's result so I may stick with PS since I can import PSDs natively. My next test is with mountain scenes I will be taking this weekend during daylight.

On the last tab (Stitching), you can choose on whether Hugin produces a TIFF or a JPEG (under Normal Output / File Formats).

At first it may be confusing, but once you get to use it, it is pretty quick and simple.

Yes, but it doesnt let me import PSDs which would be ideal.

True, would be ideal, but for the most part and being free software, it does a decent enough job.
