decided to try finding a mossy branch today and setting up a perch to get some pics, turned out I had to change things around a ton of times before the birds would perch on it

all shot with 7D & 500L + 1.4x TC

1) chickadee

It was worth it though. What did they find to be picky about? Usually, if I put up a new stick, they are all like little kids with new playground equipment, and can't wait to climb all over it. :)

I have no idea Mitch, I had another mossy stick that I even put suet on and they would not pitch on it

even on this one they would not land on it even though it was right next to the feeder, I ended up putting more food on an open plate just below the perch and then they would go on it.... but the bluejays, cardinals, juncos would not go near it

next time I think I will take the other feeder down :)

had no problems getting the ducks to come but they would not go up on the perch lol

Ah, I thought this was in your yard. Still, I have put up perching sticks down at the park and they use them, but those birds are so tame it's like yard birds. :)

Looks like another magic perch. Give them a few days and they will be fighting over it. That finch is one beautiful bird and you captured it well. Excellent series!

Nice shots! really good smooth background, CC bit too bright on the chickadee's white's (just a tad) and I think number 3 is a house finch; I remember thinking I had a pretty good shot of a purple finch and someone here mentioned the housefinch. Purple finch has deeper reds/purple throughout most of their feathers, almost all red/purple around the eyes; with some darker patches of brown/black mixed in; red/purple on the darker wing featers and breast/sides and their beak also has tint of red/purple to it.

I got me a nice stick today, it's covered in lichens, some scaly, and some old mans beard :)
