why would you put two brands of batteries in the battery pack vs the flash?

I don't mix them. I said I use the 2700's in the battery pack. All the Energizers do is run the electronics in the flash. I have the custom function set to draw the power from the external source.
Sorry if it sounded confusing.

While you are in Costco, look at the Duracell Rechargeable Pre-Charged with the white top.. Those are the made in Japan brand and as good as Eneloops, they are $18.99 per pack of 8 AA and 2 AAA batteries. They are 2000 mAh and they claimed it holds charge 5X longer vs other 2650 mAh other brand batteries. There was a coupon for $5 off sometimes ago, so I got my each pack for around $13.99 and bought 2 packs since I already have about 24 Eneloops and couple of Powerex.. Both batteries are very good. There is no Eneloops in my Costco at the moment but the Duracell is available.

i was actually going to make a post about this a few days ago...i was curious about burning up the flash. That's the LAST thing I wanna do, and Lord knows I don't have the patience when rapid firing the flash to hold back.

Really could've used it at the MMA fight i shot on saturday, but was turned off by the "allow the flash to cool". Is there anything built into the canon or knockoff's that prevent this, or is it "use at your own discretion"?

Thanks in advance, hope to hear the answer im' looking for! :)

The Canon 580EX II has overheating protection. (It is built into the flash, not the battery pack.) But still, it is use at your own discretion.

Yes, it won't matter if you are using Sealed Lead Acid, NiMH, NiCd, Alkaline, Lithium, etc... The 580EX does not have the overheat protection circuit, so you still risk frying your flash if you insist on rapid continuous fire.

I don't mix batteries in the packs either but have found that I love setting the 580exII to recharge from the battery pack only and run the actual flash off of lithuims b/c they are significantly lighter than the enloops in the pack on my belt. I have found the lithiums alone in the flash will overheat the flashes b/c they can produce a lot of heat on rapid discharge, but they last an incredibly long time when only running the electronics side of the flash. and while it by no means makes a gripped 40d, 70-200f2.8, 580 combo "light" it helps with some of the top heavy feeling having a full sized flash mounted in the hotshoe brings.(I often only have a PW)

Erik.

P.S. I am hoping 2 of the Flash Zebra's packs are what's waiting under the tree ATM.:D

Can anyone comment on the sturdiness of the battery trays? I have the older cp-e3 battery pack. I've had a few of the "fins" that hold the batteries in place just snap off while putting batteries in the tray. It wasn't even like I was putting a bunch of pressure on them or jamming the batteries in. I haven't seen a cp-e4, so I don't know if they are the same. I just know that I was disappointed in the build quality of the Canon unit when they charge $130 for them. Heck, I think just a spare tray is around $35. For that much money, I'll just buy one from Lon instead.
