Unknown rodent help ID please

Saw this little guy while hiking up in the mountains. He let me walk right up to him and didn't seem to even notice me. He lived in a hole in the ground and is about the size of the palm of my hand. Anyone know what it is? It's ears are too small for a mouse or rat I suppose.

Looking at other pics of Pika's it doesn't seem to be it. The Pika have large ears.

Yeah he was really curious about me. He was very calm UNTIL my wife caught up with me and she had our two dogs. Then he opened his mouth and started hissing at us in defense lol. He tried so hard to look big and mean.
