I have a 300 f/2.8 non IS. By itself it is tac sharp and great to use yet the minute i put either converter on (1.4 or 2x) every shot appears soft, I have used the 1.4 extensvely on my 300mm f/4L IS before I had this lens and it was sharp all the way through. I've even tried stopping down but to no avail.
Any ideas what could cause this? I literally have hundreds of shots that all look the same. All taken on 2 different 40D bodies, I tried my old 400D and got the same results.
I've posted example with both converters - All shots are untouched except for the 300 shot example by itself which is cropped and sharpened.
SHOT WITH 1.4X CONVERTER UNCROPPED
SAME SHOT 100% CROP TO SHOW BLUR (THESE CROPS WOULD BE SHARP USING THE 300 F/4L)
SHOT WITH 2X CONVERTER UNCROPPED
100% CROP OF 2X CONVERTER
300MM BY ITSELF EXAMPLE FROM THE DAY AFTER THE FIRST TWO SHOTS WERE TAKEN
