I'm starting out slow, without much for a camera. Also, picked something a little easier than a steaming plate of spinach. I have aspirations to be great some day though.

I like it, highlights overexposed and blown out though, if you could control that then it'd look better.
Could use a bit busier background.

:)

I have never tried food/product photography either, but that won't stop me from offering suggestions.

Is that Tequila or Whiskey? The bottle looks like it would be a Tequila shape. If thats the case then wood doesn't really make me think Tequila. Neither do the Curtains. Maybe add a lime or something or salt on the shot glass. Or you could even put sand all over your table. If it is Whiskey then wood is great since thats what the stuff tastes like. I am still kind of bothered by the curtains though.

The shape of the bottle is cool so you might not want to obscure it as much as you did with the shot glass. Something about the way they are intersecting is not pleasing to my eye. I really like the idea of getting the bottles reflection inside the shot so keep playing with that idea. Maybe also add some other sources of light or use a type of filter or reflector on the light to bring out that amber color.

One last thing. Is there a reason for the place mat under the bottle?

It's tequila.

Wow, i didnt even think about background or product placement to make you think of the product. My mind was more in the... clean cocktale kind of mode.

I lined up the shot to hide the half of the bottle to eliminate product recognition. The bottle has a really distinctive shape. also i positioned the bottle in a way so the label would be visible. The refection in the shot glass was intentional however.

great suggestions so far. Thanks.

This is not a good thing in PRODUCT photography, hence the name. If you want practice shoot everything as if the client is paying you baised on your performance.

Also every detail matters. From the place mat under the bottle. The color of the place mat. To how far the bottle is behind the glass. How full the glass is. How far the 2 are from the edge of the table. Why are the curtians part of only half the background. Shoot from under fluid level or above......etc...etc.... you get the picture. Little subtle changes can have a huge effect in the final image. So start thinking of every detail in the frame now, and as you progress they will be second nature.

Not a bad start I think. But what kills it for me is the forced perspective of such a wide lens.

Edit.. I dont know why I thought this was a "product" shot vs a food shot. But the concept still holds.

Photo is a bit grainy and overexposed. I don't really like the composition, its a bit boring. There are so many other ways this photo can be taken (different arrangements of the glass and bottle)

Keep messing around with it.
