I'm looking at upadating 1 body. My dillema is this. 50D or 7D. I'm currently using 2 40D bodies.

I am mainly sports shooter.

The 7D seems to have more benefits - 8FPS for example as well as higher res.

The 50D - much cheaper plus I already have a grip via my 40D's.

The price difference would be about $1400 Australian so basically after buying a grip and 2nd battery for the 7D it would be double the cost to me.

Is it worth that?

My other option would be to wait until late November and pick up a used !d MkIII of one of my pro friends (I have a few who will be selling them) I'm guessing they'll want about the same as a 7D would cost me.

Any opinions greatly appreciated.

i think a used 1DIII would be more temping, you'd probably be happier with it then the other two you mentions. the 50D isnt anything to get excited about at all. and the 7D sucks if you ask me.. and for all you pouters, don't bother crying about my comments because i don't like 7D and 50D. thats my opinion.

No idea what lenses you have but would have thought the 'extra reach' of the cropped sensor on the 7/50D would better suit a sports photographer. No conflict with your lenses for the 40D either ... assuming you have EF-S lenses.

Why do people keep saying "extra reach" for crop bodies ??? Unless I've misunderstood (believe it or not it's happened :~( ), a crop body simply gives you a different FOV. A 200mm EF lens doesn't magically become a 200mm x 1.6 lens because you snapped it on a crop body.

Anyone - please correct me if I'm wrong :o

Thanks for your honesty jorl, I have never been too keen on the 50D only the savings appealed to me.

Yes Ray it only effects you F.O.V not your focal length, if it was of such benefit they'd be much more popular among pro's.

As for my lenses, yes I have all Canon L glass as per my gear list - 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8, 300 f/4L IS, and 300 f/2.8 non IS.

Well if you put say a 70-200 with a tripod ring on a tripod and put say a 40D on then take a picture then put say a 5d on and take the same picture at the same focal length without moving the tripod or lens, the 1.6x crop sensor gives you a tighter crop on say a 22" monitor than a full frame on same monitor, making it appear like it has zoomed more. You can also crop the full frame pic to make it identically framed and "zoomed" as the 1.6x crop sensor.

Exactly, it is Field Of View only, the focal length is identical. In other words all it does is allow you see less and capture less of the scene in your frame, it doesn't make you any closer.

Do you have grounds for that statement? I mean do you own the camera? According to your sig the answer is no, so how can you bash a camera that you do not even have?

Butcha, what is lacking on your 40D bodies that makes you want to upgrade? Knowing the answer to that question will probably help us help you.

If you're looking for more MP, then go with the 50D/7D. If you're looking for superior AF/weather sealing, then the mkIII is probably your bet.

That's because Canon decided to make a camera that didn't meet *his* ideal specifications. Therefore, the camera is a disappointment, ergo, the camera sucks donkey nuts.

He doesn't need to touch it to know because he wouldn't touch it to begin with. ;)

People on these forums bash things they've never owned all of the time. It's the read and repeat syndrome.

Same thing with the 50D when it first was announced, people just read and repeated what they heard instead of actually trying the camera themselves. I guess if a camera does not fit your needs specifically then its a disappointment, at least thats the case for people on here.

Back to the OP's dilemma:

If your 2 40D's are producing good keeper rates then, if you're looking for more MP to crop, then 50D might be the better, more economic choice. (Same AF, more MP and a few other features.)

If your 40D's AF aren't providing you with what you believe you could/should get, then skip the 50D (same AF system), thus limiting you to 7D/1D3.

If 10mp is good enough for what you shoot (although you'll then need to factor in the 1.3x vs. 1.6 "reach"), then 1D3 might be more ideal since at this time, I don't see how anyone can shoot sports video successfully given the current (insufficiencies in the) live view AF.

But if 10mp has been limiting, need more MP, well, 7D would be it.

Or a 7D. And with the redesigned AF system, 8 fps, 18 MP and great high iso performance the 7D just might be the better choice for the OP (assuming it is in his budget since he is considering it ). The OP already has some great "L" glass and 2 40D's so a 7D just might be the ticket to even better quality pictures.

One does not have to "own" or even "have used" an item to bash it. Based on reviews and forum member's observations I determined that both Canon's and Sigma's 20mm lenses sucked. I also determined, in much the same way, that Voigtlander's 20mm lens is very good and now have one on order.
