Lady Gaga (external link) stepped onto the red carpet on Monday night sporting a widow-esque black veil, and minutes later, celebrity photographer A.J. Sokalner was dead. Sokalner (above, right) was working (external link) the red carpet at the ACE Awards that the 'Poker Face' singer was attending in New York City when he collapsed just minutes after Gaga took to the carpet. He was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital shortly after, and the owner of ACE Pictures, who Sokalner worked for, says emergency workers said he had suffered a heart attack. He was in his late 50s.

What's in your (external link) sippy cup?
My stuff:
A low-light hi-def rapid shooter, a sniper, a couple old school 35s.

Some L, a nifty f/1.4, a kit IS, some slow EFs and two crappy Qs.

Yeah, I thought about her hit song Paparrazi, too. And yeah, the guy probably died doing what he loved, and there is nothing wrong with that. I think, though, that red carpet photography has gotten more aggressive and perhaps someone in their late 50's would be more at risk.

Wow. Just goes to show you how sudden and unexpected it can happen, without warning. Take care of your health, everybody.

I hate it when people confuse those of us that are assigned to the entertainment beat with paps.. Most of us in Hollywood are legitimate members of the media who are assigned to the red carpet/entertainment beat.
As far as getting more aggressive, I wouldn't necessarily say it's gotten any more aggressive than it has been. In fact, Roger Karnbad of celebrityphoto.com is pushing 74 and still out shooting on the carpet everyday. Roger's been on the beat since the early 60's.

Paps are certainly more aggresive. There are some videos on YouTube showing paps harassing celebs and it's pretty horrifying. The one of Toby MacGuire trying to drive despite paps is amazing. And yes, photojournalists assigned to the red carpet is totally different from paps. If anybody wanted a graphic difference between them, study the photographers covering Prince Williams third birthday. They are polite, professional and patient. Then study the paps chasing Diana through the airport. The difference is marked. I admire photojournalists immensely, I think paps are beneath contempt. So, I totally agree with you and wish there was a way for the public to understand the difference.

It's too bad the guy died, but when I first saw this story the other day I couldn't help but think it was a dig on Lady Gaga from theonion.com.
