I would agree with thenickster; Ken Rockwell may be heavily biased towards Nikon over Canon (although he now seems to ditch Nikon for the Leica M9), but his reviews of Nikkor lenses can be quite informative. He has a good section on different Nikon mounts as well (AI vs AI-S etc.)

Talking about brand specifics will get you bogged down in arguements between the Nikon vs the Canon shooters,,totally counter productive..

The class is split between Nikon and Canon users. We're not getting into tit-for-tat comparisons, but the idea is to give each group take-home materials so that they're able to make informed decisions about what lenses they want to buy. Far too many people look at the EF 70-200L and the EF 75-300 and think "Wow, that second one has a lot more range and is cheaper, too. THAT'S a bargain!"

A lot of the folks in the class (ages range from early 20s to late 50s) are ignorant about photography, but they recognize this and for the most part WANT to learn. There's no way The Wife can teach them everything they need to know, but she's giving them direction so that they can continue to self-teach when the course ends.

never would I recommend kr. He really is so contradictory in what he says, he alone gives nikon users an unstable name.:lol:

gasrocks already posted it, but this:
http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_surv.html#top1 (external link)

is the best resource for nikon lenses. He's extremely practical...not swayed by price either. A good lens is good whether it's low $ and if a lens is expensive, it's not always the best. I've just found his page to be so valuable, when I switched over.

The one thing I would say though, because he does cover what is usable on current nikon cameras (ai, ai-s and ai'd lenses...anything else is not usable)...just because it's a good lens, doesn't mean everyone will do well with it. The whole manual focus line really does require skill & practice. People are too quick to "throw the baby out with the bathwater" these days. If they don't get instant results, they are quick to say "bad lens".

Another place I would recommend is nikon cafe (external link). They have a whole lens sample section (it's very similar to this place...really nice, helpful people) like we do. It was also very useful when I was making my lens purchases last year. It doesn't have the abuse issues of dpreview and flows very much like this place does.
