4, 5, and the last are the favs for me here. Watch your horizons though. I'd also strongly suggest opening up to 2.8. You'll learn this the more you shoot too, but when shooting across field, you have to be very very very careful with backgrounds as even 2.8 glass won't help with separation. #3 is an as example where you subject is practically lost in the image.

I know I should open up to f2.8 but for some reason I almost always get some back focus, so I end up with everyone just behind my subject in focus. That is why I shoot at f3.5, it opens up my depth of field and keeps what I want in focus. I guess I just go with the lesser of two evils.

I'd definitely get the gear in if that's the case. It does say alot about your focus (no pun intended) on your work. To recognize the issue and take the corrective steps you did shows a good understanding and willingness to be creative. Well done.

Great shots! I like number 3 a lot, but I'd fix up the horizon. It would look great on the front or back page of the paper. Do you have a reason for having the 300 on the 40D while keeping the 70-200 on the 7D? Just personal preference or whatever? I think I'd find myself putting the 300 on the 7D and then cropping more to get more without moving, etc.

sorry, aussie here but in the third pic i see like a THOUSAND knee braces, WTF, is there that many bad knees in this sport/do they absolutely need them ie soccer/afl/rugby players do with out them and they also dont wear 10 tons of amour. not bashing the sport but sorta curious

Some schools make it a requirement that linemen wear knee braces. Knee injuries are verrrrrry common in football, but especially at this level.

I can imagine they wear them while they're still growing. They're big guys, bigger than our Aussie rules guys and some/most Rugby players, so it's good that it's a requirement. Dodgy knees in the future would be terrible.

It is a pretty amazing lens. I worked three jobs over the summer to get it and it's worth ever minute I worked.

I might be totally off but I feel it is the best way to get the fastest AF out of the equipment and I figure that the photos I get with the 70-200mm are usually the goal/touchdown scoring photos and those are the shots that I will probably want to use more of, so larger files for cropping is nice.

So yeah, its just personal preference I guess :)

Here is an example:
