Sent in my 30D to canon which the shutter button stopped responding this week, and after reading multiple threads and topics on upgrading I decided to go for it. My oldest son plays basketball year round and the 30D has served me well, I am hoping the 50D paired with my 85MM 1.8 will help me in the poorly lit gyms I deal with all the time. If the 50D is just a little bit better in low light I will be happy. and if the shutter button works also.

You'll love the 50D. It's a very nice camera.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

How much of a credit did the 30D offer? How much was the 50D?

Great combo. Same 50D and 85 1.8 is my 'go-to' for basketball. Standard recipe at our home gym (not lit that well at all!) is ISO 1600, f/2.0 for 1/500 to 1/640. Pretty darned good results, too!

Enjoy and let's see those shots in a couple of weeks!

Hey DDawg, congrats on the new cam.

Some standard suggestions for new 50D users.

For better noise control:

In the camera I suggest you:
In Custom function I
1. Turn off the 1/3 step ISO stops.

In Custom function II
1. Turn off the AutoLight Optimizer
2. Disable the high tone priority
3. Set the high ISO NR to low or disable

Shoot RAW ( you may be doing this already...)
Process the files in DPP
In the DPP preferences I set the Noise reduction defaults to 0 and 0.
Then do any NR in a third party software.

Show us some pictures when you have the time in the 50D celebration thread.

diamonddawg21,,, the 50D is an impressive camera capable of stunning results, even in low light/high ISO..

What I'd like to recommend to you is check out the AF on all your lenses and AF Micro adjust any that are out..Makes a heap of difference..

What Tim is advising,,turn off any in camera processing.. This is how I've got my 50D set up.. All these settings can be easily be done via DPP if need be, where you have finer control..
