So I just got my 7D, paid extra shipping to get it fast, only to discover a big black speck in my viewfinder, and dirt on my sensor. I'm not really sure what to do here, since I don't really want to deal with shipping it back to the store. Now I expect a new camera to be completely clean, and I don't really want to deal with cleaning it myself and voiding the warranty. Also, am I just overreacting here and is it to be expected that there could be some dust already? I never really looked into all this until I first cleaned the sensor of my 350D last month, so I really am a bit clueless. Below is a shot I took of the sky at f/22, you can clearly see the black spots. To make sure it isn't the lens I did it with a different one as well and the spots are in the same place :(

Any advice in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Cleaning your sensor does not void your warranty. You were gonna have to do it at some point. If there is a black spot in the viewfinder it won't affect pictures. If you care about this then take it back and get a new one. However, dust has a way of finding its way into these places.

Totally unacceptable

Never mind, I thought the white puffs were on the sensor, not up in the sky.

As I see it,
I would expect it to be clean, so the choices are send it back, clean it, leave it, I would clean it or contact the shop and ask if they will pay for it to be cleaned local.

Buy some sensor swabs and clean it. If that doesn't work then send it back.

Most of my cameras in the past have come a bit dusty. My 7D was surprisingly clean.

First try the inbuilt sensor cleaning, then a blower.

In built sensor cleaning seems to have made it worse, I'm kind of panicking here. And I can't call the store, they're closed. This is so frustrating.

Canon always includes dust on their sensor - without charge.

That's not too bad, IMO, 4-5 spots that are quite blurred even at f/22. They probably won't show up at most normal shooting apertures, unless you're deeply into macro or extreme DoF and want to put up with diffraction softening anyway. The cameras are not assembled in rooms with the same airquality as microchip fabrication plants and a few dust specks are typical. Blower, brush, swab is the order I use for cleaning. The brushes do pretty well there's also sensor pen. If this level of dust is bothersome, you WILL need to get capable with such cleaning methods.

If in built sensor cleaning is moving it around, that's good news that it's just loose stuff on the sensor.

Why are you panicking? Did the store close for good or something? Take it back tommorow...those little tiny specks wouldn't stop me from enjoying the camera until I could return it, and it's certainly not dirty enough to ruin any pictures from now until then. If you didn't point it out then most would not have even noticed. Get off your computer and go enjoy the new toy!

Gee, get a giottos blower, blow off the LCD screen to see if the dust is on the mirror side, and do a manual cleaning blowing off the sensor. You would be surprised what a few strong puffs of air will do. Also, those very small spots at f22 won't be noticeable at f8 or lower, or even too much higher.

I bought mine new, and it has these, they don't interfere with my shots or bother me. Every body I have ever had seems to have had this. Blower took care of most everything, sometimes I had to take out focus screens and wash them, and I cleaned a sensor or two in my time, using Dustaid and also swabs.

Well this is what it looks like after I used a rocket blower and the in built cleaner, and it is now visible even at f7.1.

I don't really know what returns are like here in the US, I just moved here. So I figured I would not use the camera again until I talk to people from the store again. And well, I was panicking a bit since 1700 dollar really is a ton of money to me, and I don't really want to damage the sensor.

EDIT: also, I am in CA and I got in in the mail from NJ, so I can't really go by or anything, I would have to deal with shipping it back and everything that comes with it. And well, it is a bit overwhelming to deal with all that being new to the country.

Turn the camera upside down and blow all around in that sensor chamber. All you have is some dust and lint floating around in there, get it out, and you should be good. Also, check the back side of your lens to make sure the back element doesn't have goo on it. If the spots are moving around on you, then it is just a good burst of air away from being clean.

You are going to have to get comfortable cleaning the camera this way, because it will get worse each time you change a lens and leave the body exposed, etc. It is not defective, it is just dirty, and no matter which one you get, you will end up with this problem eventually.
