I picked up a 1D Mark IIn about a month ago and have been questioning whether or not to send it in to Canon to have it calibrated. So far, I'm loving the upgrade from my 20D. But, I think it has a bit of a front focus issue. Not much, but just enough to make things a bit soft.

I tested the camera with my 100-400 and a 75-300 and used the same lenses on my 20D, both shot wide open under good lighting at 1/80 sec. This does not happen on my 20D, the focus is spot on with it.
With any lens I try, the focus point seems to be just in front of where it needs to be.

Test image:

And the AF point:

HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'text/html' | Byte size: ZERO

What do you think?

What are your experiences with sending your 1D's in for this? Is this typical for this type of camera?

Thanks for your help.

Do you have the focus chart images from the other lens?

Also see if you can try one more lens on it.

Do you notice the issue when shooting real life images? or only when shooting charts?

Positive that it's not the lens. This is the only camera of mine that it does this on.

I seem to have left them on the other memory card at home, I will try to get them as soon as I can.
So far, I have tried: 17-40L, 50 1.8, 100-400L, 28-75 2.8 & 75-300 and they all seem to be just a bit off on the 1D.
I rarely, if ever, test any lenses or shoot test charts, I actually noticed the issue while shooting some soccer games. I just chalked it up as "learning the new camera" type of thing, but it was happening more often than I thought it should.
I don't normally pixel peep, but I do look to see if everything is crisp and clean because the posters I sell are normally 20"x30" and something like this would definitely show up at that size.
It could very well be the shooter and not the instrument (which would be great);).

I was just wanting to get some input from others who had the Mark IIn, to see what experiences they have had with this type of thing and how it was resolved.
Is it normal that these cameras have to be "adjusted/calibrated" from time to time?
I see threads occasionally where people have sent their cameras in for calibration and when they got it back, it was better than ever. What is normally the cost associated with this kind of thing (assuming that no parts have to be replaced)?

1D Mark II N has up to this date the finest AF system of all Canon cameras I have owned. Now I just bought the 7D and It might now have some competition.

I would focus on the paragraph and not the line. Line charts lead to blindness, they also lead to incorrect assumptions about camera bodies and lenses.
I count about 12 things the focus point cold have focused on in that picture. I'm going to post a link to a better tool. Be right back!

Few more questions.

1.Where you hand-holding these or were they shot on a tri-pod?

2. Which AF mode was used? One shot, or AI Servo?

I agree, this camera is far above my 20D in respect to speed and durability. You can just tell by picking one up that the build quality is really up there.

Thank you, I will try that chart, but I'm probably going to chalk it up to user error/learning curve for new equipment. I really need to play around with it some more before I start speculating that something is wrong.

I was using a tri-pod and AF was one shot with a remote trigger.

I have a 1D Mark IIn as well and I am packing it up this weekend to have serviced for the same issue. It has been stellar for years but I have noticed I am not getting as many keeps as I had in the past.

I would like to hear how your service goes, if you don't mind. I was thinking of sending it in, but I may play around with it for a while first just to see.
