This is a more traditional beach on Bali, with volcanic black sand, kept quite from the tourists. I asked the staff at out hotel if they could take us to a local beach rather than a tourist beach and the difference was startling. They could not understand why I would want to go their and them appologised for its black sand. But Im so glad I did visit, it was a much more natural and authentic Balinese beach filled with so many Balinese people, working and playing. The beach was full of life and a million miles away from the horrible tourist beaches that I so detest. Not another tourist in sight, I was gawked at as if I was an oddity, but I simply smiled and enjoyed taking in the sights of everyday Balinese life which gets hidden in the major tourist areas. I took a tonne of images along this beach but will break them down into different sets.
All along the beach were people collecting black stones, apparently they are collected for decorating their homes and temples, some people collect them to sell. I suppose the people doing this must become totally oblivious to the sea at times, which had very strong currents and frequent large waves. There was one lady sat close to the sea collecting these stones and I could see enormous waves approaching her, but she did not move an inch. She just sat there and let the waves drench her then got up and moved. Maybe it was a relief to get soaked with refreshing water as the temperatures were around 30C in an unrelenting sun.
