I see the logic in that, sunking, but you'll feel like just as big of a photographer when your pictures produce the same results from a camera that weighs half as much.

I do love my G11 and wouldn't trade it for an S90, but if there is a medical reason that OP cannot carry an SLR, it would be best, I think, to reduce the weight as far as possible. It may look like an ordinary P&S, but it's got the power of something much more.

Thanks everyone this conversation is helping a bit! I do feel the psychological reasons you say, I always thought of the G series as the best p&s out there. Somehow (even though it's not true) I feel the G11 will be the better camera, even though the S90 IQ is the same. I think going to test them out will help. I'm leaning towards the S90 right now due to weight, but if it's hard to use due to it's size then I'll get the G11. I'm hoping someone locally has one to try, I know no one has the G11 right now.

And sometimes I don't like the attention the DSLR gives me. Instead of taking fun candid street type shots everyone looks at me. I took it to our local garlic festival and would have preferred something smaller as it was hard to eat huge garlic filled sandwiches while trying to keep track of the camera! And with the light a p&s would have gotten me the same IQ as the DSLR since I stopped way down to f/8 on most of the images.

I will still need the camera and lenses for certain things I shoot, like my husband's band and things I really need control over, but I feel the p&s will save me from taking the darn thing everywhere. Something nice and light in my bag will help my back and shoulders and out of the bag my poor hands will have a rest.

Psychologically I'm more upset about losing something I love, something I've done since I was 4. I hate having to go down to a p&s after so many years of using SLRs. It seems like, even though I'm not very good at photography, I'll still be losing something by doing this. It's a big hurdle to jump.

You might find this Richard Franiec S90 grip add-on to be useful. It isn't quite out yet, but I have used his grips on previous cameras and they were great. I am anxiously awaiting this one as well.

Thanks so much for this post! Every time I"ve looked at a g11 or s90 I've reminded myself I would be losing the wonderful grip on my g9. It transformed the camera!

Changes are exciting gardengirl!

My first slr was a Nikon F2 I bought new. I've had a string of them. Favourite camera? Leica M3 with a couple of lenses.

Now my favourite camera? g9! I put a grip on it. It's incredible. It goes everywhere with me. (I have a Scott-e-vest I carry it in. You never know it's there.

I can do so much with it!For example I was taking a nice night shot of the Chateau Frontenac, and my wife was trying to hustle me along. I don't hear well.

Got a beautiful shot. No disturbances. And there was a drug deal going on behind me, and I didn't know at all! Yes I feel more comfortable with a good p&s than with my dslr.

And macro is more fun.

And it works so well from within the car while driving! Countless photos (I'm the passenger) in Newfoundland while putting 8500km's on our Porsche.

I would say that the things that have transformed my photography most are image stabilization and my g9.

Heck if I were in a wheel chair I'd put a ball head on it and have the g9 right in front of me all the time!

Richard Franiec sent out an email just today that the prepaid orders had been shipped for the S90 grip. From the pictures I have seen, I think the S90 grip add-on is going to be very effective without actually increasing the size of the tiny camera. The G7 and G9 grips totally transformed the feel of the camera, and the ease and security of holding on to it, and I was totally satisfied with my purchase.

I am looking forward to the S90 grip.

No cameras anywhere! I looked all over locally this weekend and no one had anything over $199 unless you want the rebel. So I guess when the time comes, and money allows I'll have to make the choice without holding either first. I'll keep an eye on this and other G11 vs S90 threads to see what happens.

Thanks again everyone, it's really helpful!

i also am surveying for the new camera.
i am looking for the camera which produces nice pictures.
about the size, maybe its okay as long as i can fit it in my handbag.
should G11 be okay? but about the price, it is just the same as nikon D3000.
so whats your opinion?

welcome to the forum!
photos from G11 from another thread here...

I'm a Nikon user, but the D3000 doesn't excite me. That's just me though. We've had a D40X and D60 and they've been good cameras. The shutter died on the 40X when someone else was using it. YMMV.
If you want info on Nikon cameras, check out www.kenrockwell.com (external link) He certainly has opinions, but I appreciate them. A more conservative site is www.bythom.com (external link) Thom Hogan is really well informed.

Ken Rockwell really likes the S90...

gardengirl13 I was using my g11 a few minutes ago. It is a heavier camera. I really enjoy the screen.
If I were buying today I would seriously consider the S90 and the grip referred to above. Richard F's work on the G9 grip I had was absolutely incredible.

I'm a mechanical engineer and have worked with many skilled tradesmen in a machine shop. I value good work and would buy the grip sight unseen. Hat's off to Richard F!

Wish you all the best, gardengirl.

My daughter just bought the G11 after I tried hard to persuade her to buy the S90. Frankly, I think she was more taken with the camera's appearance than truly understanding the pros and cons of both. Here's the thing, the S90 is a sweet little thing, but it is more menu driven than all the little wheel trappings the G11 sports. If dexterity is at all a concern, you should take into account which method of camera control will work best for you.

Good luck!

Hmm that's an interesting way of looking at it too. having to push little buttons to get into menus all the time may be a pain.

Still no cameras locally! I can't believe no one has them, or will have them!

I've tried the weight of my dad's G10, but it's been since thanksgiving since using it, and honestly I can't remember how it felt, and my hands have gone down hill since then.

I have two concerns that no one here can help me with, first smaller isn't better right now. I'm finding the need to use those bigger pens rather then the normal ballpoint as it's easier to hold. Small things are difficult to handle. But weight is also hard to handle. But the G11 will be lighter then my DSLR. Doing things like opening a bottle is getting hard, I think it's the tight grip that bothers that. Getting a gallon of milk to pour is too much too on my bad days, but that's also the weight not just the grip.

So I'm hoping that on a good day sometime soon I can get into the city and see these damn things in person so I can make a good choice. I really want a couple lenses and can't afford both, or all 4 I should say. Part of me (that stubborn Dutch/German in me) wants the lenses first. I want to go as long as I can with the camera I have. But another part of me thinks that the medication I'm going off of has stopped working and it was the last one for me to try. Which means the probability of my feeling "better" has going down the toilet and I might as well getting the P&S first so I have something for my bad days instead of feeling sorry for myself that I can't bring the camera with me.

OK, I'm about to buy a camera. I need to practice with it before the middle of July for an event, so I'll need it soon. I have one more question. Well maybe more, but for now just one.

I go on walks locally where there are some nice waterfalls. I've really been getting into long shutter speeds and nice silky water. I know the G11 has a built in ND filter, and I'm assuming I can just hold one up to the s90 (please tell me if this is correct.) If this will be my "only" camera for these shots, which will handle that situation best?

I know I can't get shots quite like this, but this is what I mean:

The G11 can do the silky waterfall shot with the built-in ND filter, but you can also purchase a filter adapter system for the S90 and then add an ND filter, etc. Here's the link on Lensmate (external link).

well, i got the S90 and i sold it after 3 months
i have to say is really pretty and small, and fit every pocket.
but is not as good as some people say, at least for me, i mean is a little bit superior of a $150 camera and not worst the price.
the lens is really soft, maybe just my copy, i took some night pics, panorama, and you can see a lot of noise, starting at 400 ISO, the back command ring is a pain in the neck, too easy to move with the thumb, some pics have a lot of contrast and, overall are not sharp.
i mean is still a p&s camera, you know what i mean ?
