Hi Mike. Does your Win7 really startup in 45 secs? My vista takes an annoying 3 mins Plus - and that's after I've run a bit of reg-clean software on it - which, incidentally buggered up my ability to process RAWs.
I do wish Adobe would rush out the RAW converter for the 7D so we can do it properly - I really can't be bothered with the Canon converter software.

Ah...I was just guessing at how long it took! I can time it properly if you like.

45 secs is fast!

My wife is constantly annoyed at me when I open my laptop, type a password in and immediately start browsing. She always has to wait ages for her laptop to wake up. Enabling hibernation doesn't really save that much time.

I'm waiting on making the full switch to 7 until SSD's become a more sensible price than they are atm.

Then I shall go zooooooooooooooom.

My laptop wakes up pretty quickly, a matter of seconds.

My personal experience is about 30% faster than hard drives right now (I'm working on Virtual PCs on an ExpressCard SSD). I have a colleague who's replaced his laptop hard drive with an SSD and he's saying it's not much faster in real terms (SSD have a big performance hit on writing small files). Although, saying that, the cache controllers are getting better these days.

Give it another 6 months and you'll get some fantastic drives at a reasonable price.

Hi guys :)

Would anyone be interested in a second hand LowePro Flipside 300 in good condition (not factory-fresh - I've had it a good few years and it's seen a lot of action :D)?

http://products.lowepro.com …/Flipside-300,2083,14.htm (external link)

You can get them new for around £50, and I'm giving first offer to you guys for £30 (shipping not included).

Any interest just PM me!

Many thanks :)

David

Cool. I was living in Belgium (Bertem) between 2003 and 2007. Had a great time. Still work there because I love the place :) Where abouts are you from?

Was born in Schaerbeek (Brussels), spent most of my life in Wavre (French speaking part, south of Brussels) and lived and worked both in Jette (Brussels) and the Ardennes when I got older. Then I got bored and moved to London. Never been one to stay in place too much.

I know Bertem, of course. Belgium is such a small place it's not too hard to know quite a bit of it. ;)

So you don't find Belgium too "quiet" for your tastes then? I know quite a few Brit friends who find it a bit dull and can't really cope with the "everything is closed on Sunday" situation. I say the food and beers make up for it though. :D

Being a contractor with no paid time off, I tend to shy away from week day trips. But I have to say urban exploring in Belgium is one that tickles my fancy.

I only took up photography a few years ago. Back in Belgium, I was more interested in learning to fly. Then decided that was too expensive a hobby and went for the more reasonably priced photography one instead. How little did I know! *looks sadly at his gear wish list*

Only use standby?? that should enable quick "boot" times....not sure what it would do to the battery though.....

I assumed that "Standby" meant the same as just powering it off?

No
Standby means the RAM retains data and stays powered, and the rest of the computer powers down. So will slowly drain the battery.

Hybernate copies the contents of RAM to HDD and powers down, when you turn back on the hdd copies back to RAM.

Thats why your hybernate file is the same size as your RAM.

It's quicker to return from standby than hybernate. If you are going to be away for an extended period, but want a fast return, or all open documents maintained then Hybernate is better.

Cool. Thanks Rich, it never occurred to me to even read up about it. I'll set Wifey's laptop up for Standby then (she uses it on pretty much a daily basis) and keep an eye on the battery.
