what situations should this be applied to? All?

Depends if your trying to freeze the action or not, also individuals technique maybe differ so some people can handhold very well, other might shake and move a lot. Image Stabilisation in Lenses helps to reduce the shake so you can drop the shutter speed more.

I think 1/50 on a 30mm will be spot on.

It's just a general rule that helps.

Look at it as the longer the focal length, the larger the movements of your hands appear to be when looking through it. Handholding at 200mm and you'll easily see through the viewfinder how hard it is to keep stock still. Not so noticeable at 20mm. By keeping the shutter speed high you are capturing the moment fast enough that the fine movements of your hands shouldn't effect the image causing a motion blur. I tend to use 1/60 as a base for my shooting regardless, but then I suspect I don't have very steady hands compared to some people.

Should be a great combo.

I have the MKIII aswell, so if you need any pointers just shout. This camera has lots of custom functions that tailor it for each job. I am constantly changing certain function depending on the subject and environment.

Couple of Waterdrops from last night, one is more a plughole effect but it is a water drop

Im kind of aware of the camera snobs that are out there , personally i don't give a monkeys what people think, yes the camera is way better than me , so i will have to step up to the challenge.I have been fortunate to be able to buy some good kit that will outlast me. So far i have found people on here to be very helpfull, and its much appreciated. After all, we all strive to achieve the same thing surely, to get pictures that make us go "WOW" and bring enjoyment to others at the same time.

If people moan about your kit it is only because they are jealous. Just get as much practise in as you can. If you can get along to any meets I have always found them a great way to learn, there are normally quite a few impromptu ones. Go and there and have some fun
