Thanks Ian! Im glad you posted that - i probably wouldnt have found out for another week otherwise!:o

Never won anything like that before - im dead chuffed.
I dont want to sound ungrateful, but I will need to ask what happens to my image rights before i let them print anything. As they are a camera shop rather than a print shop i doubt there will be any troublethough *fingers crossed!*

Congrats on that win. What was the winning pic? Did I miss it earlier?

1st time ive used the flash , had it pointed at ceiling to bounce the light, but still too much , ah well .... practice practice practice,

When using the flash unit on Manual mode (rather than ETTL) you have allot more fine control over how the flash will affect a picture.

You essentially have two ways of controlling the light in an image.

1. Shutter speed controls how much ambient light enters the camera during an exposure (i.e light from a window, lightbulb etc). A longer shutter speed will allow for a brighter background as it gives more time for the light to be recorded by the sensor. If you want the background to go black, turn up the shutter speed.

2. Your aperture controls how much light from your flash enters the camera during an exposure. As the light from a flash happens "all at once" a smaller aperture (larger f/ number) limits the amount of light coming in by making the physical hole in the lens smaller. A large aperture will make your flashed subject very bright, a smaller aperture will reduce that brightness.

Have a go at taking a range of pictures up and down the shutter speeds and apertures of a static scene and compare them. Its an excellent way to get your head round controlling the flash. I highly recommend learning the flash on manual before using it on Ettl (auto) mode. That way if it is not creating the effect you want, you can sswitch back into manual and set things straight.

So in summary just remember that shutter speed controls the background and aperture controls the flash.

http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html (external link) is the holy grail for learning anything to do with speedlight use. Work your way through the "lighting 101" tutorials on the drop down menu to the right hand side and you will learn lots.

I apologise if that all sounds a little patronising.

Rob

By the way, I hope none of you are travelling home from London soon, the trains are all cancelled out of London according to Twitter.

Don't I know it!

Waterloo Station to my home on a normal day: 40 minutes door to door
Today: Managed to catch one of the very few trains to Lewisham then walked for nearly 2 hours in the slush dragging a suitcase I bought today with no cabs or buses until I was half a mile from my house (a cab, which I took just to be out of the slush :) ). Total travel time: Around 3 hours. :(

For what? A bit of snow that turned to slush and then to wet roads on the larger roads (my own road is icing up, so the small ones are going to be dangerous in the morning).

Need. Food. And. Drink.

All of our friends have, thankfully. There's some car to go back and retrieve in better weather though.

My Facebook is full of messages of delayed journies home.

She won't stay still long enough to capture her here's a couple from the summer.

QUOTED IMAGE

I like this image. I like dawwggies! Looks like quite a handful and you're a brave man with the NI shooting! We're lucky to have you.

I think Jonathan would like to take your dawggy for a walk, or at least let your dawggy lick him all over, and if he's naughty, dawggy could bite him ;)

Has everyone managed to get home?

Left work at 4:30pm in SE London and arrived at Home at 9pm! Did have to go to Sainsbury's in Sevenoaks en-route. Wow, the M25 was hell today! Shattered! The roads were wet. It snowed. The roads froze and were then icy. Quite lucky to have made it home in one piece. When I started my car this morning, it was saying it was -8 C at 7am- that's cold.
