G11 arrives tomorrow. I use Lightroom 2.5 but am I correct in assuming that it will not convert G11 RAW format to .dng on import and the only way I can convert is via Canon's software on the disc for the meantime?

Download Adobe's Digital Negative converter. It's easy to use and free. And you can rename the files while you work.

If Adobe doesn't have support for the camera, DNG converter won't work on it, as it won't know HOW to convert it.

The .dng trick only works if you are using an older-version CS or LR 1which cannot support the latest ACR or LR updates to add new cameras. Typically, ACR and LR updates coincide with each other within a couple days. So even if a new dng converter does come out first, we'll usually have a LR update very soon thereafter.

So, yes, you will have to wait for a LR update to add compatibility (or use DPP in the meantime.)

I don't think that is true I have always used DNG as an interim solution with LR until new cameras I purchase are supported.

Ok, I've never tried it myself... but going by these quotes from Adobe, it doesn't sound like it should work. (There was one or two times LR update lagged a month or so behind ACR... )

Adobe DNG Converter 5.5 update

This update contains the Adobe DNG 5.5 Converter.
Adobe DNG Converter
The Adobe DNG Converter, a free utility that converts files from more than 200 cameras to DNG, enables you to easily convert camera-specific raw files to a more universal DNG raw file. Visit the Camera Raw page for a complete list of supported cameras.

Support for the following cameras has been added. Visit the Camera Raw page for a complete list of supported cameras.

* Nikon D300s

* Nikon D3000

* Olympus E-P1

* Panasonic DMC-FZ35

* Panasonic DMC-GF1

I just don't see how an out of date DNG converter would work with new cameras, when they have to add support for cameras into the converter at the same time they release ACR. But hey, if it works, I stand corrected.

The DNG route will only work if the camera is supported, which the G11 isn't. (external link)

I have a distinct feeling it is Canon DPP (which I have never used) or no RAW which is unthinkable ...

I will just have to be very patient....

Just use DPP until LR supports it (v2.6??) it's not that bad :-)
