I have CS2 on my UMBP and it ran fine and dandy on Leopard. I upgraded to Snow Leopard a couple of months ago and now I can't hardly get anything done in CS2 because it crashes the OS with a blue screen and like I just started the system!
Unsaved work is lost (Imagine how upset I was during a multi-layer edit )

From a google search, there are other people experiencing this. Is my only option to buy a CS4 upgrade?  FAIL!

You can always downgrade back to 10.5 you know... it'll probably mean full reinstall, but better than crashing...

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Yeah well, I really don't want to re-install leopard. I'd have to start all over. Frikin Apple! Why do they have to come out with an OS that isn't supported by ANYTHING!
I can't even use Canon EOS Utility stuff!

If I downgrade to 10.5, would all my data and apps still be there or would it be like starting over?

I suggest you PM Maxxum for questions on that, he deals with more Mac related failures than I do

If you want to down grade to 10.5 you don't need to do a clean install though from the issues you have said it may be a good idea. You should do an Archive and Install this is an option during the install process that will collect all system files put them in a folder called previous system and install a new system folder without touching your user folder. Since doing the upgrade to 10.6 have you done a permissions repair? You may also want to try reinstalling the Rossetta component of the OS as the old CS2 version of photoshop is not a universal binary and requires Rosetta also what version of EOS Utility and DPP are you trying to use as I have had no problems with either under 10.6

As Damian75 said, CS2 should work (I've seen it do so) - you need to make sure Rosetta is installed. It should have prompted you when you first installed CS2 (or some other older program). It's also possible that for some reason Rosetta's handler (called 'translate') has gotten lost - which is a deeper problem. If other PPC programs are crashing then Rosetta may be corrupt. The safest way is to reinstall SL unless you want me to guide you through terminal commands - which is daunting for some people.

If you open a Terminal window and type the following you should see a file called translate in it:

cd /usr/libexec/oah [press Return key]
ls -l [press Return key]

You should see the following:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 2143712 some date info translate

If this file is missing or isn't the same size then it may be corrupt. This file is required by all PPC programs. Also, if the permissions don't match what I've shown here then your permissions must be fixed. I could tell you how to manually change these but it's better just to go to Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. If you only have RosettaNonGrata in that directory then Rosetta has not been installed which is a bad sign.

I would also do a Verify Disk if it wasn't installed in addition to a Repair Disk Permissions.

Hope that helps.

Gotta be a Rosetta issue. CS2 is OLD.

I'm really puzzled by that statement. You run the latest OS, and a Photoshop version that's over 4 years old, and you expect it to work??? And that's Apple's fault??? I'm also running Snow Leopard with CS4, works like a charm:p All the software I use is fully supported by 10.6, but then I try to keep my software updated.

Maxxum, I did what you said and the file is there, according to your assumptions. It said just what you said it should.
Thanks.

What I did when I got SL, was I did a clean install, so all my apps/programs had to be re-installed.
If EOS Utilities are working on your system, perhaps you just did the SL upgrade and not a clean install?
It seems to be a known fact that EOS Utilities are not supported by SL. I called Canon last week and they confirmed this. They said you have to wait for an update from Apple.

Also, I'm not sure if the problem I'm having is common with all Mac units and CS2, but I've read of several with the exact same symptoms, so I'm assuming it's a compatibility issue.

I also really don't want to do another clean install. It's such a PITA! Downloading and installing all the apps and installing all the software and drivers and crap, not to mention backing up email and bookmarks... Ugh. I shudder at the though.

So I ordered the CS4 upgrade from Amazon for like $194. I had a $25 gift certificate that I applied to it, so it was like $168 or something. Not bad I suppose.

And Lou, yeah, I got the latest OS, it was only $30. CS4 is $200 for the upgrade...

If anybody knows how to get around the EOS Utility issue, let me know. I'd like to be able to shoot tethered, but it will not allow installation of the software for such.

edit: I don't know what Rosetta is, and I don't recall ever seeing it during installation...

If I were to downgrade to Leopard, what are we looking at here as far as options? Is it as simple as an upgrade? Can I keep all my apps and stuff or does it have to start over from scratch?

Rosetta is the app that allows non universal binary apps ie apps that were written for PPC systems to run on the intel based systems. As for EOS Utility it is running fine on my system maybe I am just lucky but I did a clean install of 10.6 onto a brand new drive and have not had any issues with EOS Utility or DPP. As for reinstalling 10.5 if you don't want to do a clean install you should do an Archive and Install this link has basic info on install types http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545 (external link)

Darn good price there - and you'll really like the upgrade :)

It's all ways wise to check all your programs before installing a new OS for compatibility. I was refering to Photoshop, not the Canon Utilities. It's been known for a while that they don't work. :(

You can also do the following (I forgot to mention) to see if SL know's where the translater is:

/usr/sbin/sysctl kern.exec.archhandler.powerpc

You'll see it spit out /usr/libexec/translate if not then it lost the link.

I don't think it's possible to do a downgrade and if it was, I wouldn't do it. SL is changed enough that doing so would probably break the OS.

BTW, did you try to repair permissions anyway? There are other dependencies that are required as well, but not for translation.

I did not repair permissions. Let me try that. I'll report back.
Thanks for your help.
Someone said Snow Leopard is the new Vista...I think I'm starting to agree...

BTW, are you just like, typing all that stuff from the mind, or do you have to refer to something? That's alot to remember...

LoL... just like Vista :)

I know many commands by heart from my IBM AIX (UNIX) days... some of them I'd like to forget like vi. It's a very very annoying text (like) editor. SL has Vi VIM IMproved... It really isn't :) It took me twice to take the $10,000 IBM course to pass :/ once for CCNA ... now those are HARD to remember, but better than HP UNIX.
