The stupidest thing heard in a camera store thread made me think of this. But it's got nothing to do with camera stores, so this is just a consumer ignorance thread.

Had a person complain to me that she needed more memory cards for her camera and couldn't find them anywhere. I asked how many she had, and it was over 100!!!

Why so many? Because she never, ever erased them. She just transferred the pictures to her PC using the USB cable, and shoved in a new card whenever the old one got full.

Why couldn't she find them? Because she only used 32MB cards! After all, that's what came with her camera.

And no, she wasn't blonde!

My uncle used to do that. His computer broke down so he just filled up cards and bought new ones. I think it was still cheaper than film.

Had another person (man this time) who bought a 300D (original Digital Rebel) with a kit lens from a friend.

He was happily shooting for years, then one day asked how my wife took such nice close ups of birds without them flying away. When I said they weren't close ups, that she used a long telephoto lens, he just looked blank.

After a few more minute of talking, I suddenly realized that he had no idea that you could change lenses on a dSLR!!!

I was at a business aircraft sales event and there was a gentleman walking around taking pictures with a 5D. I offered to let him use my 14mm lens, saying he could get some really cool effects with it on the full-frame camera. His reply was that he never removed his lens because he was worried about getting dust on his sensor.

That's not ignorance, just paranoia.

This is so PRICELESS, can't help but chuckle. That's 1 raw file from the 7d. I got out of film because of the "recurring" cost, lol.

Some pros do this too... but as a means of storage/backup(one card per job). Usually use a larger card than 32mb as well.

The memory card thing is more common than one might think. There was a parent of a girl this spring on my daughter's softball team who did the same thing. Even worse, she also shot video and had tons and tons of cards at home.

Come to think of it, this woman had all sorts of strange things going on though. She had a 20D and when she spotted my 1D she commented on how my photos (that I share with the team) were so nice because I have such a nice camera. I'm polite so I simply thanked her for her comments on the photos instead of pointing out that her 20D could do quite well too if she ever took it off green box mode.

Then at the pool party at the end of the season she dropped her EF 75-300 lens and it broke. She was freaking out that her husband was going to be mad at her because as she told me 'and of course, as you know, this is a $1000 lens'. That time I did tell her that I expected with a bit of searching she could replace her lens for $150, but I'm not sure she believed me.

Of course it isn't always ignorance. Just usually.

And also, it can usually be amended by simply reading the manual. But then, not realizing that the manual has anything worthwhile to teach one is ignorance in and of itself.

Coulcn't never erasing or using a different card size also maybe go back to paranoia?

Funny story, though, thanks for sharing.

Ok. This guy bought his first SLR, and after a bit of experimenting he starts complaning about soft images. He did all kind of tests, the pictures were not out of focus but really a bit soft. He even tries to shoot in raw, but in PP the pictures are a soft.

Only after months, including some travelling, he discovers that picture style 'faithful' set the sharpness to 0 (and PP kindly preselects the camera settings).

Ok ok, this guy was me....

I love the "I know better than you" crowd. Like some guy asks my wife how much her Sigma APO MACRO 150mm F2.8 EX DG HSM costs. I tell him just under $700 at B&H.

His reply, "You got ripped off! I can buy a genuine Vivitar macro for only a hundred bucks!"

I try to explain the difference but, of course, he's having none of it. And, he's talking about a Vivitar, not some "cheap-ass Sigma that nobody's ever heard of!"

I just said, "Why don't you go do that and leave us alone."

Next, they'll be pointing out that you can buy 500mm lenses for less that $200! You can, you know. And brand new! If you really want one.
