Recently had to rely solely on my G9 and found tjhat in less than great light it was too noisy and shutterlag was an impediment. Other than that, I really like the size and features.

Not sure if the G11 is any better in this regard. But if not, what alternatives are worth considering? Size, raw, IQ, good zoom range, Av, Tv are all important for me.

Thanks.

~Bob

Never used a G9, but the G11 is one of the best P&S cameras for low light....

Well, the G11 is looking more interesting. I may go test one today.

shutterlag and low light are SLR strengths.

I fully understand and love my MKIII. But I need something pocketable as good as I can find and the G9 is not quite good enough for my needs.

If you really want pocketable, get the S90 - same sensor as G11, faster lens and half the weight and it shoots RAW.

I'm just saying there are compromises for having a camera that goes everywhere and has a nice zoom. It isn't going to be perfect in lower light and will not have SLR-like shutterlag.

You want SLR performance in a pocketable size, it's not going to happen. You can't defy physics, you have to live with compromises.

I'd love to trade the G9 I gave to my four year old for an S90.

The S90 has the same limitations when compared to a DSLR, but it is barely bigger than my SD550. With f/2 and IS, I was getting 1/60 wide open at ISO80 in a dark Best Buy store.

I know this review is old, but it's still valid for the G9. I'm still using mine.

i've repaired my G9 couple of times for collecting dusts and moisture inside causing dark spots and watermarks. the Canon service center accused me of rough handling and costed me $140. is this common for G9 or G-Series. Would like to know before I get another G. Otherwise, i love the camera.

Yes that is what happened to my G9 and what holds me back from getting another G series camera even though I'v come very close to getting a G11 several times.

I've been wanting a very good point and shoot with the best IQ I can get and still floundering between getting a s90 ,Panny,Oly (but then expect to want better lenses) or go for the Leica x-1 which is bigger and yes expensive but less than a Panny with adapter and Leica lens bet being more portable and still having great IQ is becoming more important all the time.

Although my G9 was supposed to deliver great performance for a P&S, I have found it a major disapointment.

1Dx - 5DIII - 40D - Canon 24-70LII, 100L macro, 135L, 16-35L, 70-200 f4 and 100-400L lenses

- "Very good" is the enemy of "great." Sometimes we confuse the two.
