AFAIK, it's Canon's way of itterating an improvement that didn't warrant a completely new number.

Sort of like 1DMkII.2

I believe the "N" stands for "NEW", as in new version of. ;)

Yes, this is correct.

Practically all Japanese camera manufacturers used this at one time or another over the years.

They would update a model, but not enough to really justify a different model name... Or they would want to hang onto the previous name of a successful model.

The 1D MkIIN is a good example. It got only minor changes from the 1D MkII, a bigger LCD screen and a few other things. It was more of a mid-production update than a competely different model. So, the N got tacked on to distinguish it from the earlier version.

The BG-E2 battery grip is another interesting example. They added a little piece of rubber to the door and called it weather sealing, tacked on an N to make it the BG-E2N and raised the price $75.
