I need some help or advice here as I may have done something stupid ?

Long story short, I replaced the focus screen on my 5D MkII and noticed a very small speck of dust (when looking through the viewfinder) so I removed the screen, used a Rocket Blower and a very gentle wipe with a lens brush.

The dust speck is now gone, and maybe I should have done this first, but doing a search on the topic here it seems as if touching the focus screen with anything is a definite NO NO

Everything looks OK, so should I be concerned ?

Should I go and get a new screen and learn from the experience

Thanks in advance

If everything looks ok through the viewfinder I don't see a reason to consider changing it. I think you'll be ok.

I have the some dust in the view finder also and want to remove it. I learned that the screen comes with a small tool to assist the change. However, it looks like I don't really need that tool to remove the screen. Is that tool a must have to do the job?

Also, if the dust is not on the screen but inside, say on the prism, is it not a good idea to use a blower to blow inside?

thanks.

The small tool is absolutely essential to replace the screen properly, and considering how little the whole kit costs, its not worth the risk of using anything else.

If the dust is inside the viewfinder itself, a blower wont remove the dust IMHO

I have used a blower to gently blow on the focus assist screen (above the focus screen). If you have dust between the focus assist screen and prism, that is a very different matter. The focus assist screen would have to be removed to get to any dust and that involves removing screws. Probably safer to get Canon to do it!

The focus screen isn't that fragile. Just don't rub anything hard against it. Always use microfiber towels and clean fingertips when cleaning it. I have washed a couple in lightly soapy water and dabbed-dry them. Also, I have taken focus screens out with my fingers, just use the little side tabs, or use a tweezer, but then drop onto a MF towel, tweezer only for removal or insertion, fingers for the rest of the handling. Blow the back chamber down well, blow the focus screen well, install the focus screen, and do a final big puff of air.
