I regularly shoot football with my 350D but as the darker days draw on the quality at 800/1600 ISO does leave a lot to be desired so yesterday I borrowed a mates 40D to see what difference it would make.I think my bank balance is about to be £500 lighter

Shots look great, you definetly need to run them through noise reduction though

They are very noisy. And they look as if they have been grossly over-sharpened - look, for instance, at the white halos around the players in the last shot.

composition is excellent, however I think the images are either VERY noisy, or WAY to much sharpening...

What lens did you use? If you plan on shooting sports then invest in a good lens first. The pictures are way to noisy. A 70-200 f/2.8 is a good start.

I just got my first pair of glasses that I didn't think I needed. I apologize to anybody in the past year that I said their pictures were out of focus lol.

+1.

One the plus side, once you get those issues handled, the 40D should do a nice job for you.

If he has the wrong lens the 40D isn't going to help. You can take way better pictures with an XT and a good lens than you can with a 40D with a crap lens.

Most definitely seconded.

Although I think that the problem with these photos is definitely waaaaaay too much sharpening.

You would probably be better served investing in a 2.8 lens instead. 4.0 isn't going to get you the results you are looking for shooting in low light. Colors look good though.

while this is true.. this is not the problem here.. It is obvious that he tried to sharpen and he over did it... end of story.

:) One of the worst sharpening jobs I've seen! Did your hand slip on the slider? :)

I agree completely. My best suggestion to the OP is read the discussion forums on sports.
A big problem also is he's using the wrong aperature. Which results in higher ISO's to keep shutter speed up. If I had to guess he shot at f/11 or worse. There is no bokeh at all.

Agree with over-sharpened ( to death).
This is what seperates a 2.8 lens from the rest!
On a side note, people have chatted with me with my 300 2.8 and state....oh my lens ( 70-300) does the same as yours!!! Yeah....almost!

Very few cameras can't do what we need......it's the glass that counts!
