OK, so today I shot a War Remembrance Service in town because the local paper asked me if I could.

Now, I have done a few stories for them, and they have used my pictures. I go to the places, spent the time taking photos and editing them, and email them.

I have about 20 pictures from today that they could use (see https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=778742), but instead of emailing them, I am going to put them on disc and walk down to the offices and ask to see the person that I have been emailing.

I was thinking of asking if they would want me to do freelance for them, because they obviously like my photos, and even said today that "my photos will be better than theirs"

So when and how do I draw the line of just going out of my way to give them pictures for their stories, and all I get in return is "Pictures by Ryan Price" at the bottom.

Thanks,

Ryan.

You could hand them a disc with one hand and an Invoice with the other... ;)

You have already demonstrated that they can get their imagery work done for nothing. How many other jobs have you received from people seeing your credit in the newspaper. Photos credits are nice but you can deposit them in the bank. My experience is that people simply don't recall the name under the photo after a few hours. I can recall some spectacular shots in magazines and newspapers but don't ask me now who shot them.

I would be straight with them, you had done the images for nothing to prove yourself and you would now like to negotiate some pay for the future ones. In reality, they may very well just move on to someone else that is willing to do what you had been doing. Publications know that there are a ton of shooters out there that want to see their names in print and are willing to do it for free to reach that end. If they really do prefer your work over trying to find another person to do them they will make you an offer. I wish you luck.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I was blessed with a school newspaper that appreciated my 2 weeks of freelance work to TELL me that they were putting me on payroll.
I would either use the invoive method above, or give them a disc of heavily watermarked resized proofs of the images and tell them if they want them they have to pay for them.
