Looking at either buying or renting a dye sub printer to print 8 x 10 photos.
Which brand has the best quality for the price?
Thanks in advance

Firstly it's Dye Sub, short for Dye Sublimation. Secondly HiTi are pretty much the standard for Dye Subs http://www.hiti.com/us/ (external link)

I don't know what's going to happen to all of them, but you know the Kodak kiosks at wal-mart? Those are dye sub, and they're ALL getting replaced by HP kiosks (apparently Kodak charges wal-mart a rental fee to keep them in the stores, and HP isn't going to). So in the not too distant future, there will be roughly 10,000 of those floating around. I'm not sure what Kodak is going to do with them, or where you would start to try and track one down, but they may end up on the refurbished market.

I have 2 Kodak 1400's and they work great.
You can get one on Ebay for less than $400
Costs about $1 each to print and takes less than a minute.

This is what we use. http://www.imagingspectrum.com …dye-sub_printer-ds80.html (external link)
The DNP DS80 is very fast (approximatly 35 seconds for an 8X 10) produces high quality prints for about a $1 each.
Speed will cost you $$$ so it all depends on your budget and how much time you are willing to allow your customers to wait. You could ship out at a later date but that takes away from the whole idea of printing on site

carshop, according to this http://www.steves-digicams.com/2005_reviews/kodak1400.html (external link) it is about 1.58 per 8 x10 with a print speed of 90 seconds this review was done in 2005 and the techknowlogy may be better now.

Im not sure either HiTi mentioned above prints 8 X 10 or not.

J.Napier, HiTi does not print 8x10, I checked that link and all the printers listed print smaller prints.
My 1400's work great.
I also have the Kodal ML500 which can print 250 8x10's in an hour.
But of course its a lot more money.

Go visit a Disney, Six Flags, or another amusement park. 9 times out of 10, Sony printers are pumping out the high profit pics.

I use a Sony for my 4X6/5X7 and when I add 8X10 to the mix I'll step up to this printer. (external link) If I need volume, I'd select this (external link) in heart beat.

PO wants an 8 x 10 printer.
That Sony printer is $1200.
In my experience, you cant beat the Kodak 1440 for the price and good quality.

Speed Capcity and high quality come at a price. If your not expecting to do much volume then some of the less expensive options will work for the OP.
It is my understanding that there is nothing faster than the DNP DS80. Sony is a good printer. There is a reason that Disney and others use them for high output and quality prints.
The ML-500 is a discontinued very large and heavy product, however they will service them through next year.

Here at work we have three different dye sub printers.

First off, we have the ML 500... my boss had said that it is discontinued which is true, and we only have one more set of ribbons and paper for it - are you still able to get product for it?? It's a great printer - if we had calibrated monitors it'd be even better. I cant control that issue though... I've pushed it, and we're about to get new monitors so I'll push that issue again.

The printers that get the most use are our Sony UP-GR700 and UP-CX1. I really like the promatte option on the R710 - it's quite nice. Again, calibration is a huge factor and I know I'd like the printer more if I could match what I see on screen. I've spent hours with the software and cant get it.
