I'm posting these pictures for my father in law. He's having some issues with his 5d mkII.

His problem pictures are taken in a hockey rink. I've attached a few sample images.

These are all untouched jpgs, from the camera.

Whitebalance is set to auto. The results vary greatly from one photo to the next. One will have red discourloration on the top, the next on the bottom.

Any help would be appreciated!! It looks like a whitebalance problem, but having played with several settings, he's unable to get any consistent results.

They are underexposed a little, but why the red areas?

it looks like a filter, ie the rink or something that has a red hue...

Looks to me like there's a couple of issues here; a) the auto white balance is not handling the lighting very well and b) the camera's seeing the frequency of the lighting hence the darker areas of exposure.

That would make sense.... thanks for the quick replys. Some were taken witha 1/500 shutter speed. Would going even faster than that help?

The only thing you can really do to deal with the cycling lights is to lower the shutter speed. It may be a bit of a catch 22 situation, since you obviously need a lot of shutter speed for hockey. I would suggest shooting in Tv mode and selecting lower shutter speeds until the problem goes away or is minimized...though he'll likely have to live with some motion blur.

According to the exif, the images posted were at 1/800 and 1/1000. He needs to be at a lower shutter speed to get rid of the light cycling problem. In the US, fluorescent lights cycle at 1/60, so ideal shutter speeds would be 1/60 or 1/125...unfortunately that will be way to slow for hockey.

That's some funky lighting. Does the camera produce ok images outside of the hockey rink?

That's typical for lights that flicker, unfortunately. Most places I shoot don't do that, but there are a few still out there.

+1 Yes there are particular lights that cycle at a weird frequency, I forget exactly but it can come out with those results.
