Keep shooting, but before going out and just snapping away, study light patterns, composition, backgrounds, etc. In other words, have a plan whenever you shoot. Notice the harsh light and shadows on 1 and 2. You'll also find that as you shoot more, you'll start to think more about whether a photo should taken in vertical or horizontal orientation. As others have mentioned, these look like snapshots. btw, good b&w conversions are not easy. They often require much more than just a simple click of a button.
