How do you guys handle the "Your camera takes good pics" comments on your photos?

I'm honestly getting really tired of this. Everyday I get this kind of comment. I'll be at school with my computer out, someone sees my desktop pic, and says "Wow, did you take that?" I say "Yes I did, about a month or so ago I was at..." and they usually quickly say "Your camera takes great photos. Which one do you have?"

I've tried replying:

"A digital one."
"An SLR"
"Canon"
or even
"One that takes old film lenses."

They still don't get the hint. How do you guys deal with this everyday? And I go to art school, for Pete's sake.

Beginners talk about cameras, Pros talk about lenses, and Masters talk about light.

I suppose you could be rude, that's always fun, but probably not a good idea...tell em to go suck on a telephoto.

...you can tell I think about photography way too much

I don't advise you be rude, instead; be social..try to educate them, though don't sound mean or condescending about it - just straight up explain what you feel. Equipment goes a long way...I couldn't do auroras like I do with an XTI, that's for sure; everything comes into play, though, having the right equipment is the important thing, and knowing how to use that equipment...ah to hell with it, this is beating an old rug.

Just tell them to suck on the telephoto.

I was at an event on saturday, the journo next to me turned and looked at the guy...smiled and pulled out his cell phone, then came the best one liner ever...

Yeah mate, it even dials for pizza.

Well it's insulting to say "you're camera takes good photos" it suggest that it's not the photographer but the equipment.

A little cryptic but "a poor workman always blames his tools" was a proverb that I grew up with. It has a hint of a harsh return in it that can leave people thinking

Well...if you have very high-end camera equipment, it's not completely out of line to consider that the camera had something to do with it.

Think of it this way, you're a racecar driver driving a McClaren F1. After you win a race, would you be insulted if someone said: "wow, your car is really fast!" After all, your car being fast is part of the reason you won!

It's only insulting if you are naive enough to think they meant to insult you.

The vast majority of people regard a camera as a little magic box that takes pictures. They put it in 'auto' and let the camera figure everything out. The sophisticated ones use the little icons of the mountain and the guy running.

To these people, better camera = better photo.

When these people tell you that your camera takes nice photos they are at worst just displaying their ignorance in the control that the photographer has.

I agree with both of these. It's only an insult if you're paranoid/insecure enough to let it bother you. Most people don't mean it in a derogatory way anyway.

(By the way, this subject has been covered so often on this forum, it's now stale).
