I usually hit em in the face with the camera. They'll then truly appreciate the difference between a Rebel and 1D or 5D.

last time a friend said my camera takes good pictures I handed it to them and told them to snap a few... there comment then "hmm it doesn't see to be that good anymore" as they hand it back. I snapped off a few and said, "gee must be the person using it then!" and they got a good laugh over that one

Just say "Yes, my camera captures really nice images, but the more sophisticated the camera, the more work and advanced knowledge is required to capture the image perfectly. "

Then they will probably think that you're a pretentious git!:D

Most people who make that kind of comment just don't know any better. And they do usually mean it as a compliment...

I agree. I always say "Thank You" If they ask about the camera I will tell them the model or show it to them if it is in my hand. I guess I have always been a Southern Gentleman.

Maybe one day I'll become a good enough photographer that I'm insulted by casual complements from the non-photographer public.

You could start practicing sniffing ever so slightly from now. You want to be ready when the time arrives.

 But your camera does take good photographs. If it didn't why would you buy it?

It's quite funny, really, people bang on and on endlessly on this forum about L series lenses and the awesome capabilities of the Canon EOS XYZ camera and then when someone mentions that their camera takes good photos they get all offended.

Pretty much what I was going to say. Not surprising everyone ignored your comment.

I bought my SLR because I wanted to take pictures that I simply couldn't with my little $150 fuji. So I am not at all afraid to tell people that you need X camera and Y lens to take a certain kind of photo. It is the truth. Some shots are about a certain level of gear.

Are you saying that witty people have no tact?

Or rather have no use for it.

But didn't he have the advantage of the Pick of Destiny?
