I can almost imagine the conversation.

Him/Her: Wow, that's a nice desktop wallpaper. Did you take that photo?
You: Yes I did. I took it while I was on vacation.
Him/Her: Your camera takes great photos.
You: Well, see now. Why would you say something like that? Would you say that your pots and pans make great food to a chef? Photography is an art. I work hard at it....BLAH, BLAH, BLAH
Him/Her: Uh...OK...nice talking to you...a-hole.

Someone needs to draw a cartoon strip for that. Someone with a really nice pencil, that is.

I agree with both of these. It's only an insult if you're paranoid/insecure enough to let it bother you. Most people don't mean it in a derogatory way anyway.

(By the way, this subject has been covered so often on this forum, it's now stale).

I agree. Just be polite in return, and get on with your life.

hehe some good laffs here. I opt for the friendlier approach. If they stick around and act interested sure I don't mind explaining the ins and outs of cameras to them. Could be fun. If they just compliment one photo and sod off, fair play, i'll take the compliment for what is probably was and be happy :)

Yeah, I'm happy when someone likes one of my pictures enough to comment on it. I'm not going to lecture them on what I had to do to make it.

No, I expect the fully qualified comment:

Hello sir. Sorry to bother you but I just couldn't help but notice that master piece of a desktop wallpaper you have on your PC monitor. I am assuming that you took that picture. If indeed you did, allow me to say that though I assume you must have a great camera, it takes a great artisan like yourself to be able to wield the camera in such a way as to create such as a masterpiece. You are a great artist. I admire you. You are my hero.

I always keep a kodak disposable on hand to pull out as my "main camera" when people ask.

"oh, well I suppose its a good camera. I mean they are like $8 a peice. You have to get the ones with the flash and the Kodak Royal gold film, though. That's the key."

Saying "your camera takes good photos" is like saying Michelangelo's brushes painted great paintings.

I usually just say "thanks" if it happens... Most people do not care if it is you, or the camera who took the shot. I just take it as a compliment!

I usually respond with. "Yes, but I allow it to do so."

They usually looked puzzled and walk away. Few respond with, I stand corrected. Being friendly but firm allows for others to enjoy the experience more

Reminds me once when I told my friend who drag raced that he was a fast driver. You can guess it, He responded with "Yes, but the car allows me." From then on I have learned just to enjoy the experiences of things
