For under a $1000, the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 is a very fast lens. I use it for night-time football with good results. Should work great for moto-x as long as you are not super far away like up in the grand stands or something.

If you have a limited budget, I'd too recommend the 50-250IS and keeping the XT body. If you can spring for it, a 70-200mm f2.8 lens from Canon/Sigma/Tamron maybe even a better option, but it's much more expensive.

I also recommend getting the 55-250IS and keeping the XT. I've had my XT for several years now, and I guarantee you it can produce some fantastic shots if you stick with it.
