Hi I have been reading, reading, reading. I am wanting to invest in more equipment to use with my Digital Rebel. My interest/focus is going to be mostly pet portraiture with emphasis on cats. I would like to know if I have covered the basics needed for the equipment purchase, and anything I have missed.

60" Umbrella that will allow reflected, as well as diffused light. I guess some have velcro that will allow one layer to peel back for diffused lighting.

A good quality stand/tripod that will allow the umbrella to attach to it.

A good all around flash for use with the umbrella.

Radio control slave/transmitter that mounts on camera and stand. At least 2 channel.

Last but not least a reasonably priced tripod to hold my camera.

I have a spare room where I will setup in my home. Ideally I would like to budget no more than 1,500 dollars max. 1,000 dollars is more the range I want. Is this a realistic amount based on what I have listed?

It looks as if you could easily spend over & under your limits, depending on how high-end you decide to go. Look here for some options:
Small Flash and Studio Lighting

Personally, I'd want two umbrellas to highlight the hair, & a small backlight would be good, too.
