Would be heading to the cold come December to Korea. Would like to seek the advise of those who live in zones with such winter conditions as I live in the tropics.

I would like to bring along the 5d but would like to know first, which battery would be better to withstand the winter condition - the 5d battery or the 1dm3 battery.

Anytime I think that weather or temperature is going to be an issue, I leave the 5D at home. With that being said though I think both batteries with withstand the conditions very well and you probably won't notice any lack of performance from just the batteries.

I would pick 5D because it is smaller and lighter.
I personally would not worry about weather condition.

1D III battery is better in all condition that 5D, especially in cold weather. I own bouth camera body but i avoid to take out 5D in very cold weather....for that mark III is rock....:)

Thanks guys for the advise. The 1d battery can manage a 1000 shots while the 5d has a few hundred shots. Good to know the battery will withstand the cold. I wanted to bring the 5d as I intend to pair it with my 17mm lens for landscape. Now lit looks I will have to make good on 22mm.

Anyway hope I do get golden yellow and red leaves to shoot.

Peter

take the MkIII and some gloves with the fingers cut out so you can work the controls:
this is not as cold as Korea but it might be helpful

1DIII for sure!

Also 1000 shots from a fully charged 1DIII battery is unheard of! I did about 2000 shots and it wasnt even at 50% yet, thats with IS on and checking every few shots. There are a couple guys on here that managed 4800+ shots before the bat died.

:)

Oh, I would bring the 1DIII hands down, but if you could bring both that would be really awesome :D

I wouldn't worry to much about either battery. My XTi survived winter here in Korea just fine and I'm pretty sure my 40D and 50D will be fine.

I would take the 5D simply for the size. Traveling with the full body can be annoying.

To the OP - what type of pictures will you be shooting? That would make all the difference in taking a full frame vs a 1.3x camera.

Agree. I spend a lot of time in Korea and like in MN. MN is way colder. Now, North Korea is probably a bit colder.

Either camera works fine in the cold. The advantage to the 5D is that the batteries are super cheap and you can easily carry lots of them (keep them inside your jacket). The 1Dmk3 has a better battery but it too will lose a lot of capacity as it gets cold and the batteries are more expensive (a lot more expensive). For what it's worth, I've routinely shot my 5D at 0-10F and even to -20F once (Fahrenheit).

Both batteries are Li-ion so they will behave similarily in the cold. The benefit is that the 1Dmk3 battery has much more capacity and is a bigger thermal mass so it will (a) tolerate losing capacity better and (b) take longer to cool down. The trick is to never let the batteries stay in the camera long enough to get really cold.

Here in MN, some photogs will take those little heating packets that you can put in your gloves and tape them over the battery compartment with gaffers tape. I don't do that, it's a pain in the neck. I just keep two batteries - one in my coat, one in the camera - and swap them before they get totally cold soaked (keep them warm). You should not freeze either battery.

I think 1DMKIII. =)
But.. 1/2 of my life I've spent there, it wasn't as cold as it does in Chicago.
I don't know about now since that was 9 years ago but it should still be about the same.
weather sealing (just in case for snow) will be a plus too.

Whether its as cold as somewhere else is irrelevant. What is relevant is the location the OP will be going and how cold it will be there. If its below zero you could deem it cold enough to be concerned about battery life.
Considering other factors about the trip however would more likely lead to a better camera/battery choice.
Length of stay and what the OP intends to shoot should be right up there in the other factors list.
Theres a lot to consider about cold places other than batteries alone.

Edit: just to add; yes i have spent some time there myself. I worked down in Okpo for about 7 months. That included a January that saw around minus twelve (-12C ) every day... and one snow filled day amongst it

That was my point. If the standard batteries work ok where it is colder (MN) then they should be fine in Korea where it isn't as cold. That is irrelevant?
