disadvantages of IS?

I don't have any IS glass. I love how IS performs, I would like to add some IS glass to my collection. What if any are the disadvantages of IS as far as IQ goes?

I don't think there are any disadvantages regarding IQ - just extra price and extra battery drain

Edit: I should add that I'm extremely impressed by my 24-105L - its IS has allowed me to get decent shots as low as 1/10 sec at the 105mm end

You get sharper images with slower shutter speeds? Wait, that isn't a disadvantage...

I guess if you're just fishing for a problem, some non-sensing IS systems will go nuts on a tripod because they're too stable and, in those situations, can degrade IQ. Most systems now (I think) can sense when they're mounted...or you can just turn it off.

If I had to think of something...

Using IS as a crutch. Maybe you wouldn't practice good hand holding technique which may effect your holding of non-IS lenses.

I know, it's a stretch....

only real disadvantage i can think of is possible failure (17-55 2.8 EF-S seems to have issues with IS ckt failure). i could be mistaken, but i had also gotten the impression that at least some lenses need to have their IS ckt turned off if being used on a tripod. i'm not sure what the repercussions are on images if you forget to turn off IS with these lenses while using a tripod.

Operational wise, no disadvantages. Overall: cost, perhaps increased size and weight to the lens, down the road repair, parts issues. Jealous friends?

I can be an expensive feature. $600 on the 70-200 2.8. It's a lot.

1 monopod vs IS on 3 o4 4 lenses. It adds up fast.

thanks guys! I think that's what prompted my question "why have an off feature". you have mostly answered what I need to know.

From trying out some of my friends IS glass, I think the biggest disadvantage is that more people can become "pro" photographers!

If you press the shutter button too quickly you'll have a 'less sharp' image. Cost...

I've been living nicely with my 70-2002.8IS downgrade to the 70-200 :D

So far...

It has an off feature because it can actually create blur when use on a tripod. I have also heard anecdotes about IS creating less sharp shots on some lenses when used with very high shutter speeds.

Some lenses will move the aim point to one corner if sitting on a tripod for too long. When the IS is turned off, the lens element will shift back to centered and lock there.
