For those who HAVE shot (or currently shoot) with Nikon DSLRs- is the color really better? I've had numberous people tell me they like Nikon color. If this is true, does this apply to just JPGs or RAW as well?

I don't know if I'd say better. The current nikon dslrs do seem to render a more natural tone. When I shot canon (before I moved over) the 1Dm3 rendered the most "natural" tones of any of my canon cameras. The nikons tend to be a bit cooler and more natural still. Though I find myself warming up the shots more often than not, just because I prefer a warmer look on some things.

I've read the same over and over.

the definitely seem to render skin tones better...but that's the only case where I'd use the word better.

I've never owned a digital slr of the Nikon breed. I did have a film one way back when along with Olympus, Pentax and a couple of other no name kind of brands. I really liked the Olympus and Pentax and still have the Olympus which I still use on occasion.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I have not owned a Nikon dSLR, the first camera I owned was made by Canon. Although if the D40 had an internal focusing motor to focus all of Nikon's lenses, I might be shooting Nikon right now.

I've still got a D100. It's just about on its last legs though I think, keeps coming up with errors now. Not bad though considering how old it is now!

I keep thinking of selling the lenses (only a couple of Sigmas), and then don't because I may use it (my Canon stuff is work gear)... then don't touch it for months.

Good camera though in its day. Then I had a D2h which I liked, then I got the job I have now and switched to Canon.

Just out of interest - Have you ever owned a Nikon DSLR?

ConDigital,
Nope.. I have used Rolliflex, Pentax, Minolta and Canon in the film days. But for DSLR's I only have used Canon, and what led me to Canon at the time (7 years ago) is they were the only DSLR that had ISO 100

I find this to be true since the Nikons tend to come with ED glass - even their small DX lenses (sort of like EF-S L lenses).

When I had the D70, I shot it with an old N70 standard Nikon AF lens - no "great color" here...

I found the same when getting the more compact Olympus Digital Zuiko ED lens for my E-420 (I was using the older kit standard Olympus Digital Zuiko from my E-500) - better colors.

So, I attribute it to the glass.

When I was shopping for my first dSLR. The guy at the photoshop told me that the low end ED glass on Nikon was a better value if you are going to stick with cropped sensor cameras.

Don't throw things at me, but I am a Nikon shooter. This forum was recommended to me as a great photography forum and the few days I have been here I have been really enjoying it. But I am indeed a Nikonian, although I'm not a brand snob. I shoot with a D300.
