New MK III and sensor looks odd?

OK, long story short.

I bought a refurb'd 1D and it was fine, but exhibited the oil splatter from the Canon recall. So I sent it in. Asked to check for the focus recalls as well.

It came back two weeks later and would not focus. Some front, some back, some poor. So I sent it back in.

Two weeks later, better, but nowhere near what it was before Canon touched it.

I emailed Adorama and their customer service cannot be beat. They took it back, full credit and I bought a new MK III. It arrived today.

So, tonight I started to run my standard "new camera" tests. First, dead and hot pixels and not a one!

Then, wanted to see how clean the sensor was out of a factory box. It has some dirt. Not horrible, but surprised me. But more so, I have never seen patterns or color splotches like this on a sensor. Always much smoother.

Shot a white monitor screen and tested at +1 exposure, F22, ISO 100 and 400. then applied auto levels in Photoshop.

Below is a scaled down image and a link to the full size 5MB.

Is this anywhere normal? Not only the concentric rings, but the splotchy color? Before I go further, I'd like to know what causes this.

And I have posted in several forums to try to catch enough interest to explain this, so you may see this same topic elsewhere.

Thanks for any insight!

~Bob

Try taking a picture of something else like a white wall. That color on the top looks really weird. Not sure what that is or what it is caused by. Take a picture of something else that you can see is blemish free then see if it looks like that.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Thanks Patrick. I may try that tomorrow. But this was a solid white LCD monitor scree. Exactly as I have done many times before, but never with this kind of result.

OK, had to try something before I went to bed. Maybe it was operator error. On the first shots, I could not recall if I should have autofocus on or off. So I turned AF and IS off. The following is with AF and IS. Big difference. As a matter of fact, bigger than I would have expected:

If you really think there is splotchiness on the sensor like you see in the first pic, put the camera into manual cleaning mode and look at the sensor. Something like that, if there was damage to the sensor's coating, should be visible under a good light.
