I just got a 5D Mark II and with it a 16-35 II. I snapped a quick shot on the way to work and was blown away by the detail. Check out the image and some 100% crops:

Here's a full size pic at 16mm. How does this compare to other copies out there?

Looks good. f/11 seems to be the sweet spot balancing center and corner sharpness on mine....you might find the same on your copy. Center sharpness peaks somewhere between f/5.6 and f/8 depending on focal length.

Thanks!

I'm going to try and do some tests this weekend. I suspect it's going to trounce my 24-105 on the wide end but I haven't gotten a chance to even mount the 24-105 on the camera yet.

It looks to be much more chromatic aberation than with my 24L1.4II (almost nothing on this lens) .. I hope this can be corrected with DPP, another way you can't crop this picture at all.. I could only try the 24-105 a few shots and this zoom had also significant CA.

DxO works really well for automatically removing CA (and distortion.)

REALLY!?!

i'm shocked that a zoom lens would display more CAs than a newly designed canon L prime!

shocked I say :D!

 I don't feel that silly, they are about same prices and covers same situations and about same generation ..
I would say, last year, I was wondering to get this zoom instead the prime... when I see these results, let's say I dont't regret my choice.. ...
The title of this thread was "Impressed with my new ....." .. I am not .. and I don't consider that the prime opens at 1.4 ...

If you want to see bad CA try the 85f1.2 the 16-35 blows that away,There is not a lot of CA in those images.

I am just talking about wide angles lens at about same price, not 85mm or anything else ..
Impossible to crop this picture, even near the center of his picture, you get this at F/8  .... full blue on the left and full red on the right of the tree...

Anyway, I don't know anything with zooms, so maybe this is completly normal  I only have a 70-300DO which doesn't have any CA, but I almost never use it ... sorry to have disturb this subject ...

I have got a zenitar 16mmF2.8 which is perfect .. ;) ... for the use I have.
I don't use that wide so much .. just a small test (it just wanted to see if I could correct it with ptlens)

Well, I have a 21mm Zeiss Distagon and I find it complementary to the 16-35 mk II. Neither can do what the other can do (well, the zoom can do 21mm, but not as sharp.) I would consider the 24mm f/1.4 II complementary as well. The OP would have to get quite a few primes to cover that range. I hear the 24 TS-E II is quite the amazing lens too.
