Canon Lens for Digital Rebel

Hello -

I was wondering, I have a Canon Digital Rebel EOS 300D and I have the lens that came with the Camera ... it's a 18-55 mm ... it does ok, I guess, but I want another lens that's sharper, closer when taking up close shots ... I'm still learning, and really I'm afraid to get something that won't be the right one...I also will be doing some portrait photography ...

I was looking at this lens ...
28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM - is this what will work for what I describe? I'm not even sure it'll work with my Rebel - I found this one on the Canon site under the portrait/closeup lens...

Any help would be great!

Thanks,
Michelle :D

What is your budget? A macro lens seems like a good choice, but they range from a few hundred dollars to a whole bunch more!

If you must know...

Yea, I saw the prices, some are HIGH. I was thinking around a few hundred ... I could spend.

look at sigma 17-70. an oldie. should be reasonable inexpensive. better image quality than kit lens, faster, and good macro at 1:2.

Hi Michelle,

Another option, look for a lightly used 28-135 IS. It's an excellent lens optically, close focusing (and you can use macro extension tubes with any lens to get even closer focus), and decent build quality.

There are a ton of hardly used 28-135s around. They have been selling in kit with 40D/50D for some years and a lot of them end up as duplicates, so get sold off. It's not hard finding one for $300. I recently bought one with a lens hood (recommended, a $25 accessory normally) and a 72mm B+W MRC UV filter (around $75) for all of $275. It's like new, except no box. Normally the 28-135 sells for over $400. Serves as a backup for my 24-70/2.8.

This is a little more than the 28-105 costs, but I think well worth the difference for the Image Stabilization, if nothing else.

If interested, check the Classifieds here on the forum, your local Craigslist and used items of Amazon.com (that's where I bought mine).

I mentioned macro extension tubes so should clarify. There are really cheap ones ($50 and less) on certain auction sites. I don't recommend those. They are fully manual and a bit fiddly to shoot with. I think most people would be happier spending a little more to get the ones that have contacts so that both auto focus and the lens' aperture continue to work. Look at Adorama's ($100) or Kenko ($160). These are both sets of three tubes, which gives you a lot of flexibility shooting macro or near macro with practically any lens.

Trade in your 18-55 for the newer and better 18-55 IS.

I think you will need the range between 18 and 28, So if you get something that starts at 24 or 28 keep your 18 - 55. Whaat GASROCKS said. the newer 18-55 IS is sharper than your lens and has IS. My wife switched from the original lens to this one, and is quite pleased with it. Most bang for the buck if buying new. The 28-105 f3.5-4.5 is a fair lens, but too long on the wide end. I believe you would be happier with a more modern design, that includes down to at least 18 on the wide end. If you want a tele lens, the 55-250 IS efs is pretty good and is surprisinly inexpensive for its performance.

Id say get something that you could use for portraits and low light, 50mm 1.8, cheap too. Then save up for something you KNOW you want, cause you dont seem very sure now tbh

Consider the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. (external link)

Examples from a XTi, illuminated by two monolights bounced off umbrellas.

The 18-55mm IS lens sells for around US $170. Dollar-for-dollar, it's one of the best values that Canon makes. Another good value to be considered for portraiture is the 50mm f/1.8 II, (external link) at around US $100. Both lenses would meet your needs with a minimum of cost.

I would suggest taking a look into the Sigma 18-50 2.8 Macro. I got this lens to replace my 18-55 (non-IS) kit lens and I love it. It's noticeably sharper and I believe the overall IQ of my images has improved. Plus, you'll have a wider aperture to work with as well as being able to focus closer with it's macro capabilities.

Another lens to look into would be the Sigma 17-70 Macro as mentioned before. The macro capability of this lens is actually a bit better (let's you focus closer) but it's variable aperture throughout it's range. Although also, you have the extra 20mm reach.
