The Willet is the only North American Sandpiper whose breeding range extends southward to the tropics. Its also the largest of the shanks.

Thanks Mitch, they are quite a bit better looking in breeding plumage, especially in flight. They are big too, this one was about 12-14" high.

Excellent image quality and compositions Scott. Have you ever been around them in the spring? They get very defensive of their breeding grounds and vocal too. They can make a pretty impressive air assault when they get fired up.

Thanks Steve, no I havent yet but will pay more attention when we are back in Florida in march. This guy certainly protected his chosen feeding spot on the beach, so I can imagine what they would be like when breeding.
