First Time Post - Interesting Fellow

Greeting to all. I'm new to both this forum, and to photography itself. My Dad got me hooked!

This past weekend, our local Ferrari Club made a trip to the VA Retirement Home, to give the residents a thrill ride. I was invited along to indulge my hobby.

This was shot with a Canon 10D, the lens was a 28-135mm, ISO 200, shutter 1/250 and F/ 9.5.

Constructive critique always welcome. I cannot get better if I don't know what I'm doing wrong!

That was very nice of them. I'm sure those older gentlemen appreciated that.

This looks like a fine shot. My best advice to you at this point, is to shoot a LOT, this will help you figure out what style of shooting you like, as well as fine tuning your abilities. When you have specific questions, dont hesitate to ask them.

You and your Dad are upstanding citizens. I'm sure the residents got a kick out of it.

I'm not an expert by a long stretch. I can only say what I would try.

Looks like light wasn't a problem so I'd try ISO 100; Av=3.5 or alternatively, Tv= 1/focal length

The objective would be to isolate the subject from the background.

Not that it's that much of a distraction, but the photo would have been better IMO with a blurrier Mom and baby.

Titus, the Ferraris were pretty to look at, and they sounded incredible, but I think you would have had a better time going for a ride in my Dad's Porsche. Hands down the fastest, smoothest thing out there that day, much to the grief of the poor Ferrari boys. (not that I'm biased or anything! *lol*)

I tried to set up a similar thing with my Ford Festiva club but the retirement home said they were busy that day.

Wow what a great face this guy has! I like the play between the lived in face and the (what appears to be ) new racing jacket. I would liked to have seen a slightly tighter crop so that we can see more of his expression. I think this may help in keeping the attention in the frame instead of letting the eye get carried to his right shoulder where the mother and baby are. Only a personal opinion and I'm new to this so forgive me if I speak out of place. Nice sharp photograph though and graet skin tones.

LOL It's easy to tell that you're not a North American. That is an NFL team jacket with the Pittsburgh Steelers logo. ( National Football League)

I also love the image but agree with others that it might be so much nicer with blurring out the Mom and baby in the background. I find them much too distracting. In PS, you could just put a selection around the gentleman, inverse the selection, put a 3 or 4 pixel gaussian blur on that selection and flatten the image.

Thank you Mike! I've never tried out the Guassian blur so I'll have to play with that tonight when I get home.

It's about bloody time you show us what you can do.

Used the pen tool to put a selection around the subject, then inverted to change the selection to put selection around the outline, added a 4.8 pixel gaussian blur and this is the result.
