If you own one and you have a sec, can you verify something with me with your Mark III and make sure I'm not crazy?
ISO 3200, f2.8, 1/500, CFIII-3,0, AI Servo, full high speed burst, RAW or JPEG.
Focus on something static, do you get the full 10 FPS while holding down the AF-ON button?
*waiting for a LightRules incident...

CFIII-3,0 is AF priority right?

I am not going to burst off useless frames right now, but I can see how in that specific situation burst may slow.

Ok it was itching at me, yes mine does. It was quick, I have no idea what the actual frame rate was.

However, I did not have a card in my cam

I kid you not the Lightrules thing happened to me a few weeks ago, for ten minutes I was totally stumped!

Are you SURE your not in L- low

I drank coffee this morning, that was not good for me :)

Also, the H-high mode can be set to whatever also, so it can be confusing if someone has messed with your cam.

I actually loved that setting on the MKIII. I wish the 7D had that where I could choose the burst count up to 8fps.

Yeah, I'm not in L mode, the H mode has not been configured.
Trust me I've been through everything - Raw, Jpeg, Buffer issue, Custom Functions, MA/MF, you name it.
No 10fps in the aforementioned setting.
The camera is at Canon now and they're saying they can't recreate the problem.

If its AF priority, it may not always get 10. Especially if youre in poor light with a subject thats not very contrasty.

But the AF is locked on...
Static object, AF locked on, different FPS with AF-ON button vs. just the shutter. Never 10fps. Never.
Same if CFIII-3 is on setting 1.
It's not a buffer issue because if I immediately release the AF-ON button and fire the shutter, it rattles 'em off like it should.

Love ya man!

Seriously though, someone grab their MarkIII and let me know if I'm nuts.

Why would you be using AI Servo on a static subject??

Well, if you're in AIServo mode and focusing is done via the shutter button or you're pressing the AF-ON button, then the AF is not locked. The camera will check focus before each frame. If the subject is moving, it'll use predictive focusing to predict where it needs to focus. The only time the focus would be 'locked', i.e. camera will not even attempt to achieve focus, is if you did NOT press the AF-ON button and focusing has been removed from the shutter button.

BTW, when I tried what you requested, there was no change in frame rate whether I had the AF-ON button pressed or not (I didn't try shooting a blank wall where the camera would not be able to achieve focus, though, since you said to focus on something static). In order to replicate your exact condition, you may need to provide all the custom function settings set on your camera.

Ok i just tried with mine:
Lens Canon 35 1.4L
ISO3200, f2.8, 1/500, CFIII-3,0, AI Servo, Set on H, writing Raw to CF and L-Jpeg to SD
I tried 3 times and averaged 7fps using the clock on Windows Vista

And i just did a second test in one-shot mode and got 10fps on the same subject.
You can totally hear the difference when shooting.
I think the Pac-Man got it right with the focus check ;)

Well what is it then, 2, 4, 6?

Just curious
