i need to get a set of external HDs soon. i know the 1 tb drives by seagate and western digital are fairly reliable and i know there are problems with 2 tb drives.

so i'm trying to decide beteen 1tb and 1.5 tb drives.

thanx,

I've had a La Cie D2Quadra Big Disk (1.5Tb) for about 6 months now and it has worked flawlessly. I use the eSata connection but it also comes with USB and Firewire.

Ed, are you set on Western Digital and Seagate, or are you open to considering other brands? If so, the G Technology products may be worth a look.

They use high quality components that have proven very reliable. I have a 500 GB G-Drive, and it has operated flawlessly for two years. They have fancier products too if those suit you.

Good luck!

Between WD and Seagate, I would go with WD because of failure/firmware issues some Seagate drives have had this past year.

i'll have to ask around and see if some of the more eclectic brands spec higher grade components ... like say LG and samsung do for their flat panels.

i've never had a seagate or WD fail so i'm inclined to go with one of those as long as they make a dependable product. like i said in the OP i know the 1 tb HDs are safe but i'm not sure about the 1.5s.

Avoid the .11 Seagate models and you'll be OK.

I've been using Seagate drives for years and haven't had 1 problem.

The WD drives don't work well in RAID setups because they have a tendancy to constantly go to sleep.

normally i would just buy seagate and be done with it but i heard the seagate 1.5s had problems. i wonder if the newer units are any better?

In the past two years I have had one Seagate fail (my daughter's laptop) and one WD fail (an occasionally powered WD MyBook). My money is on something using a Samsung or Hitachi or Toshiba (before being sold to one of the big name harddrive makers)

I had my 640 external MyBook by WD fail out of box (less than 2 hours). Hard drives die infantile or with in approx 18 months. If they don't they will last a very long time. I have a very old 8GB drive that is IDE and it still works to this day.

Note, I don't actually use the 8GB, but booted it up for fun the other month.

I have a LaCie 1TB hard drive and it works flawlessly through USB - the 'Design by Neil Poulton' black block model was not my first choice but it was on sale, and it has started to grow on me - http://www.lacie.com …cts/product.htm?pid=11062 (external link). I think they come up to 2TB capacity.

I'm not sure how widespread the Seagate issues still are, but any hard drive can fail, regardless of brand. Sometimes you just get a dud or one that took some hard hits during shipping that won't last for a week while others will claim to have had the same model going strong for years. I have had 10+, mainly Seagate, Samsung, and Western Digital drives over the years and only 1 has died.

If you end up buying the HDs and enclosures separately, the WD Green drives are great for storage. Very quiet, 5k4 RPM, power-sipping drives. Other manufactures make comparable models as well.

Personally I would avoid externals that come prepackaged. i would buy an external box and put an enterprise level drive in it, for example the Seagate ES.2. They just do not put their best drives into the prepackaged drives.
