Why do I keep lusting over the 5dII? (have 7d, had 5d)

So I used to have the 5d classic, Loved the IQ but hated the focusing system and slow response/shutter lag. So I made the switch to the 7d about a month ago. The focusing and response are amazing, but I feel something is missing from the images, and keep lusting over the 5dII. The pictures just don't have that sharpness and magic that I'm used to seeing.

Would I be crazy to go with the 5dII? I don't specialize in anything, just take pictures on trips, of family, and love taking action shots of my dogs. It is strictly just a hobby, although I've done a few weddings its not my cup of tea.

Is the AF and response any better than the 5d1?

Anybody own both and care to comment?

Sounds like a used 1Ds Mark II is in your future. 1 Series AF (45 focus points, super robust build, beautiful viewfinder) and 16.7 MP of incredible image quality.

That's like comparing apples and oranges.
They are both great cameras...the 7D has the MUCH better AF system, the 5DMKII has the edge on IQ and high ISO noise handling...

I went from a 40D to a 5DMKII - it felt like driving with the hand brake on for a while. But, the 5DMKII's flippin-sweet-full-frame-butter made me forget about it.

You want it because you don't have it. If you get the 5DII, you will miss things about the 7D. JMO.

Good way to describe it. :D

Probably true, I'm sure I'm the limiting factor of the 7d, so it may not be a wise move.

Is it true the 5d and 5dII have the same AF?

If it's not the same AF, then it's probably safe to say that there wasn't much of a technological improvement going from the 5D to the 5D2, AF-wise.

Re you original question, why not just keep the 7D and get the 5D2 as well? After all, it's not like either one is a replacement for the other. :D

I didn't notice any different in the AF going from a 5D to a 5DII. If there is a difference, it's very minor.

I'm going to go play with one tomorrow at a local store, hopefully that will give me a good idea of how slow it really is. If its no better than the original, it might not be worthwhile for me, as it probably won't track a dog running towards it :(.

Ordered 7D, can't sleep at night. Cancelled the order from Abe of Maine the very next day & ordered the 5D Mark II instead.

No regret. FF & IQ are much more important to me than fast AF. I have a 40D for that.

i really think the 5d AF gets an undeserved bad rap. i tracked bike racers coming at me at 30 mph with the original 5d. the biggest issue i had was shutter lag....the center point AF was actually very good.

i went from the 5d the both of the current mark IIIs and while the AF was better it wasn't night and day. also the 1ds are more responsive, especially the 1d mark III.

if you have problems tracking with the 5d II in good light i'd say it's largely the fault of the user.
