firmware update problem

hi folks,
I'm having problems updating the latest firmware update on my 4OD. Downloading and copying to the formatted CF went ok - file size corresponded exactly to that indicated in the download page.
After inserting the card and switching on [on P] I go to the firmware update in the camera's menu. The camera is actually reading the update file because it shows the present firmware version and asks me if I want to update, whereby I click yes. This is where I get the error message and I have to remove the battery in order to 'unlock' the camera.
I tried repeating the procedure but to no avail. Has anyone had the same problem? Please note that other previous updates were carried out without any problems.
Cheers
Mark

tried that, but when I choose to update the firmware, the utility opens the browse window not the update procedure window. I tried going to the CF from the browser, but this leads only to open tab to access the folders on the CF.

I know a few years ago Canon told you to remove the lens - Don't know if you are doing this or have tried it?

I have never removed a lens on any of the bodies to update the firmware.

@OP: what is the name of the file you put on the CF card and did you put it in the root directory of that card?

Also you do not want to access the firmware on the card on the camera when you have EOS utility up. Put it into My Documents, or some temp directory on the computer, then browse to that file there.

Neither have I, but Canon did tell people to do this and it might help...

That was for the 20D and prior I believe as well as the wireless transmitter updates. Since the 30D, I don't recall seeing that in Canon's instructions. Can't hurt to try though.

In both my other two previous updates, I didn't remove the lens. I'll try it this way and see what happens. If that's not successful, I'll try your instructions on utility.

I have tried both methods with the lens removed - same result....I get the yellow warning message [on the camera screen]that there is an error in the file and that I should check the card and battery state. In utility, the camera just disconnects from the computer immediately I choose to go ahead with the update. [Browsed to the temporary file]. Update file name [40d00111.fir] is being loaded on the root directory when I try the CF method. Tried with three different cards and two batteries but to no avail.
Would a couple of good knocks with a plastic hammer help the camera decide to cooperate ;) ?

Have you tried to download the file again in case the original is corrupt in some way?

five to ten times I think. The file size always corresponded exactly to that indicated in the downloads page.

Is the camera still working ok, or is it now unusable?
If you can still use it, i'd carry on using it as it is.

Otherwise you may have to take the advice from the Canon web site - "If you still have a problem, please contact the Canon Service Center in your region"

Yes all's ok. Just thought I'd update to the latest software but guess I'll settle to wait till the next update [If ever there is one]. In the meantime, I've no issues at all with the camera as such.

Thanks all the same. Guess it's just a case of cross fingers and better luck next time.
